How important do we think mileage is on an S2??

As some of you know I'm scouring the ads for a nice S2 and I'm quite surprised at some of the mileage some of these have. From 80,000mls with partial history to 160,000mls with full history, obviously the history is the main thing to look for but at this mileage what else should be looked for regarding parts, wear and tear etc.

Whats your views lads.

Of those 2 I'd go with the 160K and full history. I gather with regular oil changes these blocks will go on and on and on..

History only really matters over the last few years. There's a good chance that even a car with full history was clocked 15 years ago.

It's nice to know that someone had the wiper blades changed by an OPC in 1988, but it's of far more value that the cam condition was checked a respected indy 6 months ago.

Also, these cars really don't like being laid up. So, 5k miles per year over 20 years is better than 100k over the first ten years then ten years in a barn.

Excellent advice as always lads thanks. Is it right there is a chain thats adjustment is part of its maintanence on the S2 engine?

Also what else is different from the usual belts of the 2.5 engine.

Thanks

There is a chain than links the two cams under the cam cover. Porsche never put this on a maintenance schedule so now it should really be changed (chainged??). Like mine. [:)] Which is for sale... [:)][:)]

Belts are the same as the 2.5.

To add to Ian's answer ... the chain wears, and causes wear on the cams.

Chains are not that pricey, and a minor fiddle to change. (Easy when done at the same time as the cam belts.)

Cams are a major expense.

Cams failing are a VERY major expense. [;)]

Changing the chain is a good preventative measure. What interval this should be done at remains a topic of debate, but at 160,000 miles it should have been done at least once ...

I'm not sure it's that easy - you need to remove the cam cover and all gaskets / seals and I thought you had to remove the cams from the carriers to get the chain on - I didn't think it was a split chain.

Yes, true.

I guess I was trying to give the impression that changing a chain is a minor fiddle, but much much easier than the major fiddle of changing the engine if you lunch a handful of valves ....

I'd say the condition and performance is far more relevant than either mileage or service history.
service history and low mileage doesn't mean it hasn't been mistreated and regularly thrashed and used on track days ....

My S2 came with no history to speak off.
The engine has done 140k has 5 bars oil pressure on startup. runs all the time at never less than 4.7bars and about 3.75 bars on tickover hot .
No smoke and it goes like stink.

I bought both the upper and lower tensioner pads and all the seals for £70. The adjuster itself is expensive....
