How light/heavy is the S2 power steering?

Have been told a few times in the last 3 years that my S2 cab's power steering feels a bit on the heavy side. Just wonder what should a 89 S2 power steering should feel like compares to newer/modern cars.

I am thinking if I should replace either the steering pump and/or rack.

Heavier than most modern systems in my experience - most humdrum stuff these days is horrendously over-servoed though. If the comparison is against "current" cars then I'm not surprised. If the comparison is against other S2's then you should probably get it looked at.

Its certainly a little heavier than the RX8's system, and quite a bit heavier than the Scoob (which is overservoed IMO).

The steering is quite heavy compared to most modern cars - I think it's one of the 944's best features as there's still a very clear mechanical connection to the front wheels.

Obviously wider / stickier tyres will make a difference as well

I have found adding KW3 and lowering the ride height has increased the steering weight - my wheels and tyres are unchanged. The steering on an S2 is not, and should not be, heavy, but it is not light and artifical like modern cars but something like a 964 has much heavier powersteering in my opinion.

It shouldnt. Theres nothing done to change the weight bias or the effort required to turn the wheels, its just that the car is lower. With slightly aggressive track biased geometry it tends to self centre less well, thats all.

Was the geometry re-set post fitting KW/lowering and was the rear TB re-indexed?

After driving Ed's (Edh) car I noticed a difference in the feel. Ed's was a bit lighter and just felt smoother. Getting back into mine I was struck by how heavy it felt. However i've recently refreshed my power steering fluid and the system, though not any lighter, does feel alot smoother and i've lost that groaning sound that it used to have. I think these things respond well to regular fluid changes.

I don't think replacing the rack or pump will do anything for the weight of the steering. It'll just put a dent in your wallet.

I was told the steering in mine is a bit heavier than other S2s. It doesn't really bother me much even at parking speed.

That's interesting Scott - of course mine was on my track D90's with 225/50/16 fronts & yours has 17" wheels - maybe that's the difference?
