a good question but how long what time/ mileage does it take to get oil up to normal working temp? i have a 285bhp c2 & use 10/40 valvoline oil, last oil in it was gtx magnatex 10/40.
mine seems to take an age to warm up, i was told by last owner not to go over 3k till temp was up towards the mark, is this right? i never give it stick from cold, only when its up to the mark!
but would like your comments.

What do call an "age" ? During these summer months, I'd say mine takes about 10 minutes, though I do live at the top of a hill so the engine's not under much load for the first mile or so. I'm running Silkolene Pro-S 5W-40 for comparison.

I also keep the revs below 3k until temperature is reached - your last owner was correct. I was given the very same advice by the dealer I purchased my car from.

dave, the thicker10w will take longer to get up to temp over a thinker 5w and that over an even thinner 0w....

but like Darren I've beening running Silkolene Pro-S 5W-40 (a doesn't eat oil) for a while which is a noticeably quicker than the last time I ever had a 10W40

Cold viscosity will have little or no effect on the time it takes to warm up the oil .. that is entirely a function of heat produced by the engine.

What does vary is the lubrication provided during the startup phase, and with our hydraulic lifters, the ability to pump up from first start (hardly cold start at present!)

IIRC, there are no 10W-40s in the Porsche approved range, they mandate 0 or 5W cold viscosity, but its in the articles if you want to look it up ...[8|]

In answer to the original question, about 5 miles .. ![:D]

cheers, Maurice

of course oil is quicker to warm up on a hot day v a cold day [&o]

but all things being equal, then it is the oil which is a factor and as you go up the W scale thicker means more time
