How long to 998?

All the magazines publish 'spy photos' and 'leaked exclusives' (often with incorrect claims) well in advance. The Gen.2 997 was widely anticipsted two years ago, and you can be certain the 998 will follow in late 2011. No crystal ball required []
For those people who must always have the latest model it must be very frustrating.

My OPC claimed they didn't know anything about the Gen2/PDK until a couple of weeks before launch. Not sure I believe that - what have other OPC's claimed? So I'm not sure if they told me the 998 will be launched MY2012 that I'd believe that either! Then there's the question of what the World economy will look like in 2011/12.........
The LAST place you should try to get info on up and coming new models from is an OPC!!! They don't know Jack!
Best places for info are from Porsche GB product development guys, Porsche AG workers, and the internet (assuming you get a few collaborating stories together).

The next Porsche 911, the 998, is doing the rounds on German public roads. By the looks of it, the headlights are more vertical than the current model, and based on what's covered, the front and rear bumpers and valances will see the majority of the work. Intriguingly, the side mirrors on the car are from the 993, which we imagine are for testing purposes only. If the lower rear valance is any indication, the exhaust outlets could come in for revision, as well. These are the first crystal-clear shots of the next-generation Porsche 911 "" internally called the 998 "" that will replace the current model in 2011. Few days ago we reported that this here (same car, but from a farther distance in heavy rain) was the new 911 Turbo, but on these pictures you can see that the side air-intakes in front of the rear wheels are fakes "" and so is the huge rear wing which hides the shape of the smaller spoiler of the standard 911s.
Compared to the current model, the front lights are standing more upright and the side mirrors have moved from the side window corner to the side of the door(Porsche is using the same mirrors on the prototype as it had years ago on the production versions of 968 and 993) Don't get confused by the rear lights as these are just temporary. The next-generation 911 will feature the same flat-six engine that surely gets a power boost and the new PDK dual-clutch gearbox.

Ok Alex, but to satisfy my curiosity, in May/June 07 was it widely known/anticipated by those you mention that the Gen 2 would have new engine/PDK/ PCM 3 etc, as it was before my time on the forum?

...damage limitation by Porsche AGI do understand why they (the OPC's) aren't forthcoming about new models but in this age of information at the touch of a mouse it now all seems rather pointless.

It all follows a cycle no? roughly 7 year model life with facelift after 4 years.
With a bunch of "specials" (colours, trim etc) appearing in the last year to allow customers to self-justify buying now rather than waiting.
And on a major change (body shell shape) Porsche seem to keep the old model selling for some derivatives after the new is released. (Did this happen at the 996/7 change?) - certainly 993TT was still selling for some time after the 996 basic editions were available.

Yes, I remember picking up my 997S in November 2004 at the same time as a guy was taking delivery of his 996C4. Struck me as an odd decision at the time, but it was some months before the 997C4 was launched and the 996 model was still being actively sold.
