How many 944s are left?

From the 14k miles S2 and the price of S2 parts in general in recent times it got me thinking how many of each 944 do you think exist today? I'm going for the Silver Rose and Pre 85 cars being high on the list of rare 944s, but what about the numbers?

I've got one!

No, let's make this a bit more scientific. Chaps, if you've got a 944, please put your hand up. That way Chas can do a nice easy count without needing to go out to the car park in the rain.

Got about 900 on the Register. I'd guess several time that number are not in the Club, so many thousands left in the UK at least.

Not very scientific, though....[&:]

Remind me not to ask these questions again after a couple[8|].

The question also arose from another forum too where there seem to be more cars getting scrapped/written off than there are on the road (Dolly Sprints), as well as a few posts here indicating that 2.7s and Ss are not exactly common.

2.5 litre Supers were quite common, especially 1987 models. On paper the car was great and it sold strongly in its first year. 2.7 litre cars didnt sell well at all though, which was why they were dropped after one model year. The price was just too close to the superior S2, which attracted most of the orders.

I have seen some figures, hence my comment, but I cant remember where. Im sure that it was DVLA currently taxed/SORNd 944s Vs. PCGBs sales figures for the same...

Apparently the manufacturing figures for the 944 are: -

About 110,000 for the 944 lux, 2.7 and S models

25,000 for the Turbo 220 + 250hp models

20,000 for the S2 coupe and cab models.

When you compare it to something like the Jaguar E-Type of which about 75,000 were made there were quite alot of 944's. (I know the E-Type is not a good comparison but I dont have any other figures!)

However the relatively low numbers of Turbo's and S2 made perhaps indicates that these will continue to be the most desirable and subsequently more expensive 944's out there.

Less S2's than Turbos ... see, I told you they were special!

(That's the cars that are special. Not the owners. Thanks for not getting the wrong end of the stick there.)

Well done sir i salute you, i posted a thread ages ago about the scrappage scheme claiming vehicles it shouldn't do and it may well have ended up claiming yours if the previous keeper had hung onto it.
