How many 944's remain

Does anyone know how many 944's of each type were produced and how many are still on the road or is this an impossible question?

Steve

Actually, it is possible to know.

I read an article sometime ago that quoted the number of certain models of car currently road registered.

The data comes from the DVLA, but I don't know how one would access it.

As suggested, it used to be possible to get the DVLA to supply a list of all of a certain type of car still registered with them for a nominal charge (£5 rings a bell),

but you had to give them a good reason (e.g a friend of mine was club secertary at the Peugeot Sport Club and I'm sure he got a list of 205 GTi's for the models anniversary the other year)

I'm sure Mr Smith has the perfect excuse being the register secratary, and this being the 30th anniversary of the 944!

Of course anybody without an excuse could get the information from the DVLA under the Freedom of Information Act (for a small fee no doubt!!)

Thanks Andrew that was what I was looking for on numbers built.

Next question is what was included in the Sports Pack, does anyone have an original brouchure. I have a 1988 944 Turbo so it would be good to know if it is a standard car or with a SP added.

Steve

Having tried to elicit this information from DVLA by phone on a number of occasions i.e. numbers of 944s left, I confirm that they do have them but cant/wont release them. Maybe a written request with a fiver in would fare better.
Have done an interesting arithmetical model to approximate the numbers.Estimated number in your town divided by the population of your town multiplied by UK population (63000000?), in the case of my town: 5/70000 x 63000000 = 4499.999. In round terms there are about 4500 944s left... the missing .001? Any ideas?(Old Joke!).[:D]
Could we all try applying this sum to our own town, and get some more stats.
Regards

My head hurts [&:]

I think I'll just write to the DVLA and see what happens? [:D]

Porsche-Apart suggest that they have dismantled 55. I'm not sure what this proves but I found it interesting.

I'm about to dismantle one too, so thats one less - still it is a red one so I'm sure Fen will be pleased [;)]

I bet it's closer to 4,500 on the road
Absolutely! As per my first reckoning...however Ive taken into account Andrews estimate of 50% which has "boosted" the numbers.

It was your first reckoning that prompted the 4,500 suggestion. That might even be a bit high but I guess a lot of them are second cars (jeez, even mine is these days...).[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]As a pure estimate I think the numbers you see around suggest maybe 2,000 left. Consider how often you coincidentally see cars with known numbers:[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Audi RS2 - there were 180, it's estimated half remain. I see two or 3 a year I guess. There are 5 RHD versions on AutoTrader today.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]Scoobie RB5 - there were 444, don't know how many remain but I bet no more than half. I have only seen one in the past year I think. There are 9 on AutoTrader today.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]306 Rallye - there were around 500 I believe, at a guess half may remain. I have only seen 2 since Christmas when I started to pay attention. There are 7 on AutoTrader today.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]On that basis there may be roughly 100 cars for every 5 listed in AutoTrader.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Today there are 148 944's suggesting 2,900 cars remaining, very approximately.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]

I love statistical analysis, it can prove almost anything. [;)] Henceforth the above will be known as "Fen's AutoTrader Rule."
