how many miles is high mileage ?

What is high mileage on a 944 ?
My 86 2.5 Lux has done 204k miles but Bob Watson who did belts etc 1k ago says that its really good and can't find anything else to be done.

Who has run one much higher than this ?
 
944's can be considered as an everyday driver type of car so I think anything over 10k per year would be considered as higher than average. Your car is now 23 years old so I wouldn't consider it to be unusually high until it passes 230k miles. The engines are not overly stressed (especially in 2.5 N/A form) so as long as regular oil changes and scheduled maintenance is performed then it will continue to run sweetly. Other things will obviously wear out as time passes but that is to be expected.

We ran an online poll back in 2003 and most 944's were around the 150k mile mark back then

I'll check, but my neighbours everyday 944 is well past the 200K mark, with no significant parts (non-service) replaced other than wishbones and fuel pressure regulator.

I'd guess that a carefully driven, regular cruising use, with obsessive oil changes, engine is almost limitless? Wasn't there a Volve P1800 with original engine, clutch etc. in the States with something like 3 million miles on it that had just done constant 55mph use? Most suspension, braking or steer parts are only really subject to type of use and age-related limits, not mileage. Apart from, I suppose, the driver's seat, it could be argued that mileage is far less relevant than any other consideration? [8|]


 
My turbo is on 225K currently. I have all the previous history, its only a 3 owner car. 90K went on in the first 3 years and after that it settled to "normal" mileage.
It's had a big top end rebuild but the block should be fine. It certainly goes ok.
I know the oil has been changed regularly as I have the receipts!
 
Ive just bought an 83 car with 144000 miles on it but it's had 23 previous owners which is a record for any car that ive owned !!!

One analogy, whether you consider or not, is that a high number of previous owners is not always a bad thing (probably more so on a car like a 944). If you consider, an enthusiast will tend to throw money at a car they have just purchased to bring it up to spec, so it could be a wise purchase in the long run.

Couldn't agree more. Mine started out as a guy's company car, then he bought it out for his wife, then another family member - all the time servicing it religiously. The next owner spent silly money on paint, teardrops, stereo etc. whilst doing only about 1000 miles each year. Every owner has been fastidious with maintenance throughout it's history, and that at least suggests they weren't idiots thrashing it around.

The thing to avoid is lots of changes of owner in a short period of time, for obvious reasons.
 
I would normally agree but i think this car has had a lot of owners due to the fact it looks ok to start with but once you get into it you quickly realise thats its not as good as it looks and is not worth keeping mainly due to the fact its a "cut n shut" job and not a very good one at that !!
 
My 14 previous owner car (with 203k miles when I bought it) has stamped up service book and invoices from new with OPCs and well known specialists in a thick ring folder. Two owners ago it was off the road for six months having a really comprehensive refurb. Mostly these cars are run by enthusiasts who spend the money on them.
 
If its a real "cut n shut" job- i.e. two accident damaged cars welded together crudely, then its a danger to be on the road. Presumably you got it cheap to break for parts?

Yes i only bought it for the roof and will break the rest of the car for spares. Its not as bad as 2 halfs welded together but has had the boot floor and back panel off another car stiched into it which wouldnt have been too bad if it was done properly but its a bodge job and the n/s rear quarter is comming away where it joins the back panel !!
