How many shims to skin a cat?

yesterday I thought I'd killed one of my cats.... Started the car and squealing noise. Stopped after a while but later had a look and found the alternator belt was slipping and quite loose. Took belt off and will replace with a new one however noted that only 5 shims whereas the books I have say there should be 6 !
Looked online but nothing conclusive.

I must have your sixth shim as I'm sure I had seven when I changed my fan belt. I personally can't see there would be a problem unless five shims doesn't loosen off a new belt enough. All the diagrams I've seen have six shims, I guess you've seen the Drivers Manual p71, for example.
Perhaps buy a sixth shim when you buy the belt and you will have a full set! I don't know where you prefer to buy your consumables but the belt should be a reasonable price at your local PC, and you get a genuine Porsche part! Good luck with whatever you decide.
It's time I fitted a new belt again, they are such a very important part and need to be kept adjusted. Their role in providing the cooling shouldn't be underestimated.

have found a bit more info regarding these pesky shims. Apparently there should be a total of 6, can be inside or outside of the pulley. The 6 ensures that the pulley nut does not over tighten and damage the pulley itself . I only had 5 and to be honest getting the nut undone was a real pig, way more than the 40 lbs torque. I'll replCe the belt with 6 shims and see how it goes. I have a spare belt in my tool roll but to be honest it looks like it came with the car in 1987 so I'll keep that as a momento. New one , and a spare coming. Also took the opportunity to get a spare dme relay. Always had a spare but went with my last car . My local opc is Swindon who are great but a fair distance from me so ,bits and bobs I get from Design 911 who are really good , easy website and quick delivery and vor is not a problem as I can catch up on the gardening [;)]
