How much oil !!

Ladies and Gents

Today's question is how often do you have to top up the oil in your car.

I have owned the car for 4 months and twice now the 'Check Oil' indicator has come on. Although it has only taken 1/2 a litre both times is this normal ??

Oh and during that time done approximately 2000 miles

Never came on once with the Cayman !

Check your handbook but I think Porsche reckon that an oil consumption of up to 1.5 litres per 1,000km is acceptable, although that always sounds a bit excessive to me. Like yours, my 987.2 CS doesn't use any oil.

I think that you mentioned in a previous post that you're getting a lot of oil deposits on and around your exhaust pipes, so it may be worth getting the bores scoped just to make sure that there's no scoring present. Otherwise it's just conjecture - oil leakage past valve guides or piston rings, faulty AOS, etc?

Yes, it does seems that this is the norm, have been to several web sites now and all seem to say the same thing. 1/2 - 1 litre of oil per 1000 km, but only on the 997. The 996 is not effected and neither does it seem are any of the other engines built by Porsche however the amount of oil used on these discussions does tend to vary, which I guess is on how hard it has been driven during that 1000 km, and as you stated Porsche do say the same thing.

I have checked underneath and in the engine bay and there are no leaks, drips or oil splats and no smoke at start up or when you put your foot down.

I have topped it up now and the mileage is 19222, so will monitor and see how it goes but the car drives fine so I guess/hope I really have nothing to worry about.
 
I think you'll find all the flat 6 engines are affected, some more than others. My first 997 used about the same as yours does but my turbo doesn't use a drop between services. It seems very much luck of the draw and how the piston rings sit when the engine is turned off.
 
I've had my 997.2 for almost 12 months now. I've done 17,000 miles in that time and I reckon I've put in about half a litre.

Never ADDED any oil in any of my Porsches.
The ideal situation is when it is serviced it is full and when it goes in for a service it has dropped a bit but above low mark - an engine should use some oil
 
I have found the 997.1 to be very different from the .2. My .2 uses very little oil and my .1 used on average 1500ml over 4000 miles, it is also worth saying that when I sold it the boroscope results were perfect. Whilst owning the .1 I typically only did spirited driving but when I did the odd European trip the usage was a lot lower, I put this down to the motorway miles and the lower RPM / driving style.

My thinking is that if it is .1 expect some oil usage and as long as it is below the official figure (1.5L per 1000KM) then all is good. If it is a .1 and it is just being used for spirited driving I would check it every 500miles, if it is a .2 then just rely on the gauge and the occasional check.

So it got to 20,200 before the oil light came on so I guess it's just a case of adding a liter every 1000 miles, better stock up now on oil.

Just for balance, apart from the debacle of Porsche Toulouse only putting in 3.5 litres of oil during the service rather than the 8 litres they charged me for (see my previous post on this forum), my 2005 997.1 doesn't use any oil at all as far as I can tell. It always therefore rings alarm bells for me when people say the oil they use is measured in litres per 1000km! Especially when the oil ain't cheap! Definitely keep an eye on it would be my advice. Just a note to add to this from a recent track day event at Brands. I used 0.5 litre on a full days track session which did surprise me as I made sure it was topped up before I left.

As an aside, what oil temperature would you expect to see running a few hot laps in Sports Plus mode?
