How much would your 944 cost today?

I just read a really interesting historic article that is in the buyers guide section. It was written in 1986 discussing the newly launched 944Lux vs the first gen 944 and the 944 turbo. The price when new for 944 Lux in 1986 was £18,234. It got me wondering what was the equivalent value if the car was bought new today. I've found a link that is able to do a comparison check of cash values from history to present day:

£18,234 is equivalent to £49,404.....

Removable electric tilt and slide sunroof: 1986 £703.89 - today's equivalent £1907.18
Automatic climate control: 1986 £1187.28 - today's equivalent £3216.91
Leather sports seats: 1986 £1187.28 - today's equivalent £3466.70
Electric height adjust to sport seats: 1986 £532.25 - today's equivalent £1442.12
Metallic paint: 1986 £443.52 - today's equivalent £1201.71

That would make mine priced around £57,000...... Wow...

What about yours???
 
i don't think those figures give a true value of how much these cars cost in relation to costs today.... I bought my house the same time as my car's year of registration..... house was around £26k...car was over £30k..my house is in North London so one of the most expensive places in the country...similar houses elsewhere would have been less than half that...so today if the car appreciated at the same rate as property you would be looking at over £500k...god knows how people afforded these cars...only for the rich...

In 1988 I bought a brand new 205 GTI for £9500. I imagine the equivalent modern Peugeot would be at least double that. So looking at the cars cost when new and then doubling it shouldn't be too far off.

I wish I still had that 205 - it was great. But I swapped it for a....guess what? Yep - a 944. The first of many.
 
A new Cayman S is around £50k before discounts, car prices have come down in real terms.
 
1.9 205 GTi was an amazing car. Raw power and lots of fun. I had a reanult 5 GT turbo Rader. I thought I was the bees knees. One of those cars that turned heads

Ha, the 205 GTi guy that tried to keep up with me in my X-Pack RS 2000 ended up on his roof.
 
Had a 205 GTI and loved as did her indoors who does not really do cars, also had a Renault 5 GT Turbo (mad thing) Loads of RS 2000's though not an X Pack nearly bought a red one though ! i did have one with a genuine Group 1 engine + plus though, lightened, balanced etc.
My 944 Turbo is the absolutre nuts compared to previous though.
 
Had plenty of RS's, GTi's, GTE's, M3's, Cosworths etc. in the 80's and early 90's.

The 2 fastest cars for the money was the Astra GTE MK2 16v with the digital speedo... These were crazy 150mph+ monsters for not much cash.

The other one and funniest was my mates Triumph Dolomite Sprint running Dellorto's I think. We were racing a Group 1 engined RS2000 with a 5 speed box on the M6. The RS was nearly flat out and my mate said put the window down and tell him we still have a gear to go [:-] This was at 110mph so I gave him a signal saying this and he accelerated in his RS and Sean flicked the overdrive button and off we went leaving him for dead with the RS engine blowing soon after up trying to keep up [:D]
 
I had a last minute visit to 205 GTI thing moderately recently,went nuts,retrimmed interior fancy stereo,KW suspension,slight mods/engine rebuilds for good power,one of the best cars I ever owned like a front drive Elise MK 1,drove it hard but the only problem was it broke a lot and cost a fortune to keep running sweet,scared very fancy cars on a Castle Coombe track day lots of dirty looks in the paddock,happy days still miss it.[&o][8|]
 
We're showing our age now :) Two 205 GTis for me as well and guess what, last one was changed for a 944.
 
Think you're right re us all showing our age.... Happy days with some great cars. I never owned one but always wanted one, a 2.8 injection Capri. Was a passenger plenty times and the car scared me to death. If you check the prices of them now they are only going one way.

However, I'm sure we all feel the same, hence we all own one. The 944 was one of those dream machines for me. Just love the look of the car.
 
I bought a new 944 Turbo in 1990 and the list price so far as I recall was around £50,000. Amazing that I spent a similar amount on a 981 Boxster last year.
 
There's no doubt that current "hot" cars are much cheaper than 20+ years ago & so a simple inflation type ratio calculation is not truly indicative-mainly down to technology advances throughout manufacturing,robotisation ,higher volumes,clever design,diecastings ,common platforms,etc.
Porsche exploits its brand & engineering & can do because the cars -work,just as Dyson charges a massive premium but they also -work.Analyse the components & they are cheap to make,mass produced items.

My daughters 3rd car was a Peugeot 205 XS (sensible insurance for a student) & not as tempting for competing boy racers-& when correctly set up not much slower than a 1.6 GTI-she says it has always been her favourite car so far.

I think it's fair to say that car values and house values go in opposite directions - particularly in London. Given how much money I spent on my car (about £4k) and how much I spent on property in London (a bit more than £4k), I'm very glad of this fact - as I expect you are too.

I have the original purchase invoice for my S2, and it is more than I think my house would have been worth at the time. There is now an order of magnitude of several hundred between them. If you were back in the late 1980's and knew then what you know now, would you have bought two houses and a tube pass?

My favorite car i have owned but got written off when parked was a Savage Cortina, a proper one with twin fuel tanks, can still remember the reg number, TAN 505F

its sister car is in the offical ford book of the cortina, TAN 501F.

think it might be worth a few quid today
