How Rare Are Turbo Engines?

Evening guys I have been thinking for some time about buying a spare turbo lump to rebuild and eventually in the dim and distant future dropping it into mine. Not that mine is shot but I am running at 160K. Questions is how hard or easy are they to get hold of? Or where would I find one? Is it just a case of luck? I have trawled the usual places i.e. fleabay but can't find anything (well anything that I would pay the money for anyway). What sort of money could one be bought for? Has anyone ever done this before? A lot of questions I know chaps so thanks in advance.
 
In the present market someone will no doubt be along soon with a view that it's not worth spending a large proportion of what they see as the value of the car repairing the bodywork on something with serious rot. At which stage someone like sulzeruk buys the whole car and you do a deal for the engine. This sounds like a medium / long term plan for you (and why not?) so surely it's just a case of waiting for a while and one will turn up.

Personally, if I were thinking of investing the labour cost of a complete engine rebuild I think I would find it impossible not to go for a capacity increase. Either a 2.8 stroker or I'd start collecting parts to put together something like Barry Hart's 3.0.
 
I have to agree about waiting for something like what you describe. I am in no desperate rush it's just something I want to do just for the crack as much as anything. Not sure I agree with the capacity increase though. I am already running a tial DPW and aftermarket chips which I am more than happy with and most of the time it is a struggle to use all of that on the UK roads. a 2.8 or a 3.0 litre would also represent a massive investment of cash I just don't have. I could probably stretch to an engine and the cost of a rebuild over time as a project. The labour of course would be free as I would do it all myself. It helps to be able to do this when you are tight fisted [:D]

I have 2..................but they are both fitted in my cars at present [:D]
Jamaes Eaton, Sulzeruk and Mr Butterworth are the usual suspects for one.
 
You could probably use a lux block and crank with some aftermarket rods and pistons. I don't think there's much difference between the turbo and lux blocks..
 
I was just thinking about an entire lump that needs some love and attention but was mechanically sound. It certainly wouln't be a quick project as obviously I wouldn't have the cash to shell out on everything needed straight away. Once finished I would just do a straight transplant one for one as I don't like the car being off the road for too long. Just had it off the road for a month and it was like losing an arm [:(] I would obviously rebuild it with widefire HG etc.
 
The early Turbo blocks are much stronger (220) forged crank rods and pistons as standard reputedly good for 500+ BHP, Porsche stopped doing this as it was costing them too much in production costs = profit.

The pistons will be different in the turbo due to lower compression ratio ??
 
Rob, my mate has a bottom end for sale from the black 220 I had before. There was a complete engine but I have taken the head as it had been refurbed and done zero miles. It is a 1986 motor so has the strong internal. He is looking for £450 for it.

Al I would rather a complete lump so I don't mind waiting for it. Now the car is getting pretty much spot on I could do with a little project. I'll call you tomorrow anyway it's been a while since we had a chat. If you see anything suitable though give me a call and there might be a little road trip to Bonnybridge in the van in the offing. P.S. working for EMD now mate not Alstom.
