how rare is the 2.7?

out of all the normal 944s the one i see least advertised is the 2.7 and they seem to hold there money well , it was the last produced small bumper shape isnt it as the 944s was stopped in 1988 and only produced for a year so does anybody know just how many were actually put into production?

from what i can figure out from a book i have the 2.7 was announced in august 1988 for the 1989 model range and a total of 5421 were produced but can anybody back this up? or say how many were destined for europe?

for anybody else intrested it says there were a total of

112369 - 2.5 944
24406 - 944 turbo
12831 - 944S
12475 - 944 S2
6059 - 944 S2 cabriolets
625 - 944 turbo cabriolets
217 -944 turbo cups

According to Peter Morgans book Original Porsche 924/944/968 there were 2730 2.7L cars produced for the ROW market & 2691 for USA/Canada/Japan. But it does not say how many were brought to Britain.
 
ohh not got that book yet,,is it any good? so far iv got the brian long one,the porsche 944 gold portfolio and various old mags with reviews technical data in them but always on the lookout for intresting 944 reading
 
Take a look at it, I think its about the best reference book on these models. Its always available on ebay, at all the shows etc but checkout the price on Amazon as a guide.
 
I think the S might be fighting with the 2.7 to be the last Lux body car, isn't it?

I don't think the 2.7 benefits in value from being a 2.7, possibly from being a late model though. The S gets a bad press as it is seen as troublesome (though in reality no more than the S2, which has no such reputation) which probably makes it seem cheaper against the 2.7.
 
According to my book the 944S finished at the end of 1988 to make way for the S2 for the 1989 MY
The 2.7L was only available in 1989 so it would be the last lux bodied car.
 
It's fairly uncommon because they were only made for one year as stated. The best thing about them is you can use their block and head as the basis for a monster 3.2 litre Turbo [:D]
 
I resisted the temptation to say they should all be broken to donate their engines to the higher purpose...
 
Even rarer are the 2.7 Autos - I read on one advert that there were only 12 sold in the UK but not sure that is true. I had difficulty with some insurance quotes though due to the fact the model is often not listed!
 
So....what IS so special about the 2.7 engine then? Is it due to it having the bigger bore and short crank that can be altered to give 3.0 with an 8valve head? Just curious as mine is a 2.7...[:D]
 
Exactly, it has the bore of the 3.0 engine but with an 8V head. All other 8V engines had the smaller bore of the 2.5.
 
Nothing really special about it, the 2.7 and S2 (and the 968) share the same block with 104mm bores, a standard crank gives it a 2.7 capacity, a short throw makes it a 3 litre. Bore it out to 106mm and you get a 3.2 [8D]

good article about the 944S and 2.7 end result = he loves the 2.7 and likes the 944s a lot

i was also surprised to read the 944S is actually slower than the standard 2.5 lux in the 30-50 and 50-70 ranges

wonder if the prices of the 2.7 will go up more now that its the best,last and rarest of the S1 shape

then again maybe im a bit bias as i own a 2.7 [8D]
