How resilient are the hoods?

We have no garaging so our cars have to stand out in all weathers.

We are now after a 718 S PDK to replace our 56 plate Cayman S Tip and are leaning toward the Cayman for this reason. We have had a Boxster which was kept under a cover and the hood seemed to be none the worse for it. [strike][/strike]

Is my concern misplaced, or, in our circumstances, is this the right thing to do? I don't want to have to replace the convertible hood every few years.

Comments invited.

Just reproof it at least once a year or twice if you want extra protection but it will be fine outside.
Or you can buy a hood outdoor cap.

Cars are made to take the weather and just to underline thisin there's no hard top.

Just use a proprietary roof cleaner and protector every year or two (Most people don't bother) for extra protection.

New roofs are mainly £600 to £800 at your local trimmer and are pretty easy to do.

I parked my Boxster 987 outside my house in a tree lined street for 4 years and never re-proofed it and it never leaked.
The only real worry for me was the sapp from the trees which I washed off regularly (almost daily) with a hose.

We have a nearly 4-year old Boxster 981 that is a daily driver and left on the drive every night and the roof is only just starting to look like it needs a little tlc where the fold creases are starting to show. No need to miss your open air motoring in my opinion!

I used the above with the Gtechniq pre-cleaner.
Supposed to last for 3 years.
Once treated any water just beads and runs off the roof.

Many thanks for all the helpful replies which have set my mind at rest.

I'm torn between the 718 S PDK Boxster and Cayman, having had one of each previously. I had PC Nottingham's 718 Boxster S PDK overnight recently and was impressed, it felt even more stable and secure.

I could order a Boxster today. Otherwise, I've been told to expect a build slot shortly for delivery in October/November for the Cayman S.

Decisions, decisions,...........

David

PS. For sale shortly; 56 plate, 9/2006 Cayman S Tip. 44k, 2 owners inc. me, recent (today) service, front springs, coil packs, tyres, exhaust clamps etc.
