How rubbish are the locks...!

Right, last night I did the unthinkable, Got out of the car and manually locked my door and shut he door without taking the keys out of the ignition! Having not got spares cut yet my heart sank at the prospect of having to pay a locksmith or worse breaking a window.
So I thought I'd just try anything in the lock just incase they might fit and it turns out a teaspoon can gain enterance into my car [:(]
I did my best to just laugh the whole thing off as it is immobalised but now I can't think of anything other than getting newer locks.
Has anyone else done this and have any advice?
