How to drive a 996

I was thinking of a half day track drive with an instructor. My 996 is my first rear wheel drive car and first with as much power, I can't help but think it would be beneficial to learn how to handle that extra power and drive safely.

As anyone done this and if so did you find it worthwhile? I live in Yorkshire so a Northern track would be best. Anyone got any details?

Many thanks.

Chris

If you do a search on this forum for "ProDrive" you will find a thread or two from a couple of years ago. I missed the day, but went on a non-Porsche-specific day run by the same people a few weeks later. It was great fun and I learned a lot. I Recommend it. They are just south of Birmingham - so maybe further than you want to travel.

I did a regular track day and hired an instructor for 3 sessions during the day. Allows you to get some practice in between lessons. Many around but I can recommend GOld Track Driving Club.

an absolute must unless you are a natural schumacher[:D]

my wife bought me a track day at bedford(porsche day)with a couple of hours instruction in addition-my track times and confidence before and after were very different!!-hugely worth it and thoroughly recommended

There's plenty on here...

I'd recommend the 'Car Control' course for you, where you get to use the latest 997 Carrera. The course is to develop an understanding of what happens when a Carrera reaches the limits of the tyre's adhesion and safely explore how to correct both under-steer (loss of front end grip) and over-steer (the rear tyres breaking away).

Would any of you be interested in getting a group together for the Porsche Driving Experience Centre at Silverstone? It would be nice to have a "Forum Awayday". I'd be happy to co-ordinate it and get some prices etc. I've no idea how big a group we would need to get together, but if 10-12 people are interested I think it would be worth looking in to.

Hey Richard

sounds like a most excellent plan
time to find the red line
err under instruction of course[;)]

I would definately be interested

Region 10 have arranged a day of "experience" sessions with CAT driver training at Millbook for May, but I'd certainly be up for a go at the PDEC, especially as this would give me a chance to try a 997. We'll be going through there in our own cars on the MK Classic Tour at the end of April, but not with any tuition.

Sounds like a great idea Richard, I'd definately be interested!

Hi Richard as someone new both to the forum and to 996 ownership I would be interested in learning more about my car's and more importantly my own capabilities.

I'd be interested if a C4 Cab is suitable (unless someone can lend me a Turbo[;)]). Unfortunately, it looks like the GT3 will have to wait as I've been informed that the house needs new windows plus the RAC are paying a visit in the morning to prise the Rangie out of the garage.[]

If you want a road experience, then I had a half day with ride/drive when i got my first tvr. They have a website and have folk empoyed all over, i found that really good. Its a one to one session, mine was in northumberland.
The R3 region are currently organising a skid experience day and that too is based in the northeast, have a look at the R3 thread on it, This chap offers one to one on a disused air field near felton. These might be options closer to home but i'm not sure where you are based?
