I was pretty convinced that my front driver's side suspension clonk whenever I went over a bump or rumble strip was the ball joint. I've taken the arm off and the rubber boot is in good shape and the ball joint isn't flopping around everywhere so i'm questioning myself now as to whether that is it. What is the right way to check the wear on it?

How to gauge ball joint wear?

The MOT-man-method is to have the car on a lift with the wheel at chest height, jacked (so the wheel is in the air), and give it as much of a wiggle as you physically can. Any play felt in any orientation can then be traced.
Essentially, give it a very hard wiggle. It should be very stable. (Beware that there is just about always some movement in the top mount on 944's, and this is normal.)
Oli.

I don't believe it, I've only gone and fixed it! Turned out to be the arb bush nut was loose so the bush was clnking in and out of the socket on the arm. Took it off and checked it all over before reassembly and a test drive, all fixed!
Feel very chuffed with myself for not dropping it off with the mechanic and this counteracts the fact I wasted my time taking arm off in the first place. Evn better as I pick up my new Design 90 wheels and tyres tomorrow too.
