How to replace steering shaft?

Had the MOT done today and got an advisory on the steering shaft, the tester took me to the ramps and showed me where it has play at the bottom UJ where it connects to the rack.

I can find enough info to suggest it's relatively common, and the part is £70 ish from an OPC so all good. What I can't find is a decent writeup of how to change it, can anyone help/point me in the right direction?

Thanks, David.

Beautiful car sir ! My Alpine White example is the 'brother' of your car - F590 GTM. Nice to see it looking so shiny ! Hopefully someone can help you with your problem.

There's 1 x 13mm bolt clamp bolt top and bottom. undo these and you will also need to at least loosen the 4 rack mounting bolts, also 13mm.
The theory is that it should slide off and then slide the new on , in practice they are really, really tight, especially the lower one!

911&PORSCHEWORLD have a tech feature on steering rack overhaul this month, haven't read it yet though so not sure it covers your problem.

Easy enough to do, aside from the old one probably being a bit seized on. Just be careful when you refit and tighten up the new joint. There's some 'in and out' movement at the rack end and if you're not in the middle of this travel when you nip it up then the steering will bind slightly as you spin the wheel and the shaft effectively gets longer/shorter.

Steering should feel much smoother and more precise with a new part fitted :)

I had a look in WHSmiths and it doesn't cover this, good shout though.

ChrisG - Thanks for the email, will be in touch nearer the time.
