How to set seat position etc using different keys

I have been trying to set different seat/mirror positions with each key I have, but without success. I believe I have followed the instructions in the manual, i.e. with the ignition on using key 1 indicated on the instrument panel I press button M and 1 simultaneously. With the key removed I then move the seat manually, close and lock the door, when I unlock and open the door the seat does not move. The seat and mirrors will move to their 'set' position by pressing button 1. Key 2 is the same i.e. the seat/mirrors will only return to their key 2 'set' position by pressing button 1. Setting up buttons 2 & 3 works fine and is not key dependent.

Is my understanding correct that I should be able to set a different seat/mirror position with each key and then when unlocking the door with say key one the seat/mirror position will automatically go to the key 1 set position (if it is in a different position) without the need to press button 1 and the same with key 2.

My 996 handbook states up to 4 keys can be programmed to each car!

1 should always default to driver
2 and 3 memory will operate once touched

The seat / mirror option is one I have never considered.
Its the driver side switch and not the key fob that gives you seat memory
Door mirrors always remain in position 1 in mine.

One word of advice - the gen 1 key fobs are poor - I replaced both of mine and had them coded by the Indy I trust (£100 for the fob plus £15 code x 2)
