How to spend £1,000 quickly on new boots

I thought the forum might be interested in this recent experience.

I may have owned Porsche’s for nearly 20 years but I think this only the second set of new boots I have ever bought. The challenge to replace the tyres on the Targa. PZero’ N0 Rated 245/35/R20 (91Y) on front and 305/30/R20 (103Y) XL on the rear.

Elite the PCGB recommended supplier, offered a good benchmark price. All up £964. I arranged for the tyres to be fitted at their nearest location to me Southampton - a round trip of some 90 miles from Newbury.

To cut a long story short…the tyres were waiting for me….garage did not have the kit to fit 20 inch wheels. Really. Recommended I go to their Mannings Heath Depot at Horsham in Sussex. That’s a round trip of approx 200 miles. So I went along with that until I came up with a better plan.

My local OPC at Reading were approx £50 a tyre more. Do not sell enough to get better discounts was their quote.

After a certain amount of arm twisting I got my local ATS in Newbury to basically match the Elite prices. All up £980 fitted and balanced. They took AmEx so got my Airlmiles as well. Elite were only Visa and MasterCard.

Hopefully ATS did a great job and left your wheels in perfect condition. [:)] Plus the extra £16 was cheaper than driving 200 miles!

P.S. Aren't Reading one of the biggest OPCs in the country?!

Yes ATS did a splendid job. Very professional outfit at Newbury, tyres filled with nitrogen and balanced in the overall cost.

OPC Reading v large .....but imagine not something they really want to offer unless at full ticket price.

Interested as to why you chose Pirelli over Michelin? Only asking as I face the same decision in the not too distant and research so far favouring Michelin.

I've just put the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S , N0, 20 inch, on my cayman. I'm really impressed, much quieter, more compliant over bumpy roads, no Ackerman effect, excellent grip in wet and obviously good in the dry. Only negative thing is the cost, but , as they say, you get what you pay for.
Cheers

Yes, as you can see from my post, N0, so that's why I was able to fit them. I don't believe they are available in 19 inch sizes.

About time have Pirelli‘s at the moment
must be one of the worst tyres in the wet
new set to be ordered ??

But, if I understand correctly, MPS4S N0 are only homologated for 718. Do we have any info on 991.x ?

I was told only Pirellis were available for rear Turbo S wheels size 305/30 ZR20 (97V). Desperate to change to anything else that will do more than 6000 miles (except Michelin which don't last that long) Bridgestones and Continentals lasted twice as long on my 97 Turbo but do not seem to be available.

Quote locally £1,200 fitted!

I think that the MPS4S N0 were produced because of the 718, not exclusively for it, remember, it's just a tyre, although the N0 spec has slightly different features to the non N0, for example the extra protruberance of the rim protector.

Costco Warehouse prices:

Michelin 245/35 ZR20 (91)Y PILOT SPORT CUP 2 N0 £266 fitted

Michelin 305/30 ZR20 (103)Y PILOT SPORT CUP 2 XL N1 £385 fitted

When I researched which tyres I could go with Porsche only recommended PZeros and Dunlop’s. Hence stayed with PZeros. I’m dry weather driver so not experienced the dodgy wet issues.
