how to transport 944 for mot

big al

New member
hi

i need to transport my 944 for it mot (at the moment its sorn off-road) i am thinking on getting a tow dolly, there are two types one that tows your car on all four wheels (would this be legal as my car is sorn off-road and do they fit under the standard spoiler) and the other that lifts the front two wheels off the road ( again would this be legal as my car is sorn off-road and would the rear under spoiler clear the road)

anyone with experience please give me the benefit of your wisdom [:D]

I'm not 100% certain but I believe, provided you are booked into the MoT Station, you can drive to the MoT Station. Obviously this assumes that you take the most direct route and the MoT Station is one of your local ones.

hi

this would be the best option as long as it passes or i could have a long walk home[:D]

as i am off the beat-on track the nearest testing station is approx 14 miles

almost agree John, and was about to post the same...however...the problem is maybe not a lack of MOT but no road fund licence?(Car is SORNed) Your are correct that you can drive to the MOT centre without an MOT...but without Tax? Thats slightly different.

John is correct - otherwise how would you get it there? Not everyone can tow a car.
Must be booked in though.

HOW FAR CAN I DRIVE TO THE TEST STATION?
I am aware that a car that does not have a current MOT Certificate is not allowed to be used on the road except when going for repairs for a test, or to a prearranged test. Is there a milage limit as to how far a car can be driven without an MOT if it is going to a test centre - ie can one drive 40miles in the car if it to be to an MOT appointment with a garage?

No there is no mileage limit

where are you big Al ? and when do you need the car moving?
if its not too far i might be able to help.

hi

thanks for the offer i am south of Aberdeen ( i bet you wish you did not offer now)[:D]

Of course it can be driver when on SORN or untaxed - you can't tax it without the MoT after all.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]As I think has been established now you can drive it to a prearranged MoT test without tax or MoT (needs to be insured of course). I understand now that if it fails (at a computerised centre) that you are not allowed to drive it thereafter regardless of tax etc. situation - even if it passed the day before if it is ANPR'd it will come up with a failed MoT and why it failed. I imagine you can take it home again unless the MoT tester declares it unsafe but I don't know about that for sure. If it leaves the premises where it was tested you have to pay a full fee for retest.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

[:-]didn't know that... thanks Fen
[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Neither did I until my 306 failed a couple of weeks ago. I couldn't even drive it home at 5pm and come back first thing in the morning so had to get SWMBO to pick me up. It's because the mileage has to be entered and can't increase between test and retest.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Yes, i was going to by an untaxed and unmot'd 924 a few weeks back and the testing station told me that as long as it was physically booked in i would be ok .
Unfortunately though i didn't buy the car anyway.

We believe not! Thats precisely why the guy needs a lift. MOT is fine, tax NG. Always read the small print.[8|]

Sorry you've lost me - what small print? Big Al has a car that has been off the road on SORN and the MoT has run out. He wants it back on the road. The order to do things is to insure it, then to make an MoT appointment and drive directly there. Hopefully it will pass or he will have the MoT testing garage fix any failings so it passes, then he can buy tax and it's job done.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]It is a fact, not my speculation, that he is allowed to drive it to (and from so long as it is not dangerous) the testing station without MoT or tax so long as he has an appointment, he goes to a local test station and he doesn't stop off anywhere or park it on the street. Lastly he needs to tax it for the month it was used on the road as soon as he has an MoT certificate. The only problem is if it fails on something the tester considers makes it unsafe to drive elsewhere for repair in which case he will need to trailer it if he wants to move it.[FONT=verdana, geneva"][FONT=verdana, geneva"]
