Is there an easy way to clean the 1/10th wheel on the mileage recorder which gets so dirty?
Why does it go black, get so tarnished?

George, It was something that bothered me with my car so much so that I looked through my maintenance history and found reference to a dodgy speedo mechanism requiring the binaccle to be disassembled to replace the speedo mechanism. I assumed that the clumsy mechanic laid his dirty fingers on the barrel. They also managed to put a very slight kink in the end of the speedo needle which was not really noticeable, but once you did notice it is stuck out like a sore thumb.

If your binnacle has not been disassembled at any stage then I can only guess it is due to small particles being produced due to wear of he cogs which find their way over time onto the face of the number barrels.

I've always thought that a nice project for someone proficient in electronics would be to replace the mechanical speedo and rev counter, replace with a small high def LCD screen and replicate the standard look dials digitally. You could also have options to change the style of the dials (modern 997 dials or even Knite Rider Kitt style), customise to show whatever info you wanted (useful for modders wanting to show extra info without fitting mechanical dials everywhere), interface into a sat nav, show iPod display and mobile phone address book etc.

George,

I took apart the cluster when I cleaned the lighting prisms and noticed it was relatively easy to wipe the dirt off the trip counter as it can be "rewinded" by hand at will.
I didn't dare touch the total counter though, as I was concerned with breaking something and I'm rather proud of it showing 302,000 km [:)]
