How would a 2010 Boxter compare to a 997 2S for a trackday?

Hi Peeps

Just curious would there be a massive difference in the performance/enjoyment factor between taking these different cars to a trackday?

Would the handling characteristics be similar around a track for a novice first timer who didn't know any better and just wanted to get a feel for driving a performance car hard around a racetrack?

i would say it depends on:in no particular order

1.the track---twisty track favours midengine handling,straighter tracks favour the bigger engined rear bias 911.
2.the ability of the driver!!enough said-a novice in a boxster is very likely to have a lot of fun wherever.
3.your definition of performance vs enjoyment!!i have as much fun in the 993 at lower speeds than i did in more powerful newer cars with more gizmos.

in other words,as many answers as you wish reallyas far as enjoyment goes-in pure performance terms refer to points 1 and 2

Personally, I'd say the Boxster (ideally an 'S') would be more fun and just as quick.

I've driven several Boxsters (and 911s) on track, and always preferred the Boxsters, although my usual track toy is a Caterham.

Some years ago I did a Porsche driving day at Castle ,and there was a range of 986 and 996 variants for drivers to take out, under instruction. We drove everything back to back and there was universal praise for the 986'S'. One chap even said he thought it was more fun than his 996 Turbo.

Roof down, there's the extra spacial awareness and an even more vivid driving experience.
 
In my opinion the Boxster will be easier for a novice to drive quickly and can be a lot of fun. An experienced track jock driving both cars would be marginally quicker in the 911 but not by much. A quick driver in the Boxster will beat an average driver in the 911 every time as I know to my cost. The cars are quite different in their handling characteristics but both are fun. To drive a 911 quickly requires the right technique especially a C2S as they dont turn in very well (at least mine didnt) its easier to carry speed with the Boxster but it lacks a bit of grunt down the straight bits
 
There was a 996 at the BoXa.net Bedford track day last week and none of us Boxster drivers could keep up with him. Maybe he was less of a novice than the rest of us!
 
My guess is that there is not much between a 997.1 S and a new Boxster S.

I swapped my 997.1 Targa 4S for a new Boxster S and it feels just as quick - but the Boxster has a much more balanced and stable feel to the handling.

Yet to take up the offer of the Silverstone handling day to get a feel for it on the track.
 
From my day at the IAM skills day last week, which was NOT a track day (oh yes it was!).... at Mallory park, which was set up to be a relatively slow track (for the novices there).

I'm a novice 997 driver and managed to overtake a Boxster and also be overtaken by a Boxster.

Whatever, I had a blast and it was fun. Oh and I should note I also overtook a Fezza (no i don't know what sort, I only saw it once [:)] )
