Humming Noise

I notice in my (short ~ 12 minutes) drive to work that I frequently get a humming noise from the engine end of the works, but only after the car is warmed up. It is definitely to do with the engine, since if I engage the clutch and let the revs drop it goes away. It is noticeable in the 1800 - 2400 rpm region (trickling along), obviously I can't hear it when I am accelerating due to other engine/wind noises. There are no other accompanying worrying symptoms, so is this something that anyone else has experienced, and should I investigate/be worried? I have noticed it on the occasional longer journey and then it stops after a while.
Cheers,

Graham

Can you feel an actual vibration as well?

Only thing I can think of is a slightly misadjusted balance shaft belt, but it can't be that if it comes and goes [&:]

Check for any loose heatshields around the catalytic convertor and also in the engine bay, I've had a few vibrations over the years caused by these. Just bend them about a bit [;)]

I get a similar thing every once in a while. A sort of whine from the front end, I can normally hear it as I am slowing down between the revs you mention. Again it can be sparadic and you can't reallty replicate it when you want to, but it did get a lot better after I had the belts retensioned last year (they were new) Might be worth a check.
