Hunting and smelly exhaust after service!?

Just had big 12K service inc. tappets etc. Now RPM wanders around at idle plus exhaust smells a bit rich(?) Spoke to Indy who did service who said "that's odd as nothing I did on the service could make this happen" He's agreed to sort it - fair enough but it involves 100 mile round trip for me - but is it true that service could not cause this?

Considering what he's done, two things spring to mind:

1. Has he forgot to reconnect the oxygen sensor - could be easy to forget to plug it back in.
2. Has he overfilled with oil and fouled up the intake and ISV?

unlikely - sure the tappets, new air filter and so on will modify the mix a touch - but the dme should compensate for that.

Thinking of it - have a look at the air filter and airpipes/sensors first - on the induction side and also the blower area - see if anything is loose. Any small loss of integrity/vacuum would cause the thing to not settle down.

Lastly, you may just need a dme reset and a "drive in the style of" - the dme adapts a little to how you drive the car. I would disconnect the battery - wait 5 mins, reconnect it and go for a typical drive; 20 -30 mins or so. There is a way to reset the dme from the ignition and pedals but I can't recall it.

This may save you from a long drive.

Is this the thing which pushes/plugs into the slightly flexible rubber thing left of center when you look at engine?

The oxygen sensor is in the cat (or cat bypass) on the left side. If you remove the left rear wheel you will see the wire go into a grommet that takes it through to the engine bay where it is plugged in. To check if it is plugged in you will need to remove the blower ducting on the left side. If you've not done this before be very careful of the wires plugged into the ducting (temperature sensor on the top and resistor on the left side) as you don't want to damage them.
