Hydrailc lifter/tappet type noise

Hi all,
My first post, but reading what's here so far, I'm sure I'll get some good advice.
On my last 993's service, the workshop noted what I had been hearing ever since I bought the car (40k miles now, 36k when I bought it), which is a ticking from the left bank. They and I assumed it was a stuck or worn lifter. So this service I asked them to fix it. However the dealers are saying that having replaced the lifters, the noise is still there and could be a broken valve spring. To investigate further involves removing the engine to get at the cylinder head.
I have asked if an oilway could be blocked. Does anyone have any ideas ?
Thanks, Mike

Welcome to the Forum.

How loud is it and is the car basically running ok ?- I have not heard of a broken valve spring before unless the previous owner over-revved it on a downward shift.

Any oil smoke or high oil consumption? I guess a compression test may help diagnosis if it's valve trouble.

Its not really loud, I mainly notice it if the passenger window is open and the ticking echos back from what I'm driving past. The car runs fine, although the chap from the dealer said he'd noticed a slight misfire which he atrributed to a lifter issue.
I get the odd puff of smoke when starting but no excessive oil use.

Thanks.
