I can't open my Bonnet - Help

It seems as though the pin from the bonnet has got stuck into the hole on the car body. I can pull the bonnet release and there appears to be the right amount of tension when I pull it. However, no 'clunk' as I do it. The bonnet is quite close fitting and it's difficult to get anything to prize it open. In addition, I'm a bit nervous to do this as it may damage the paint work.

Does anybody have a solution to this seemingly simple problem please??

Oh - btw it's a 1984 944!!
