hi guys i have a carrera 966 3.4l straight six c2 it seems to judder a little when ticking over and tap it has the right amount of oil and it drives perfect is this just the nture of this engine and will increasing the size of the sump with the thicker gasket help oh and my mate said it could be the engine mounts how would i check this cheers [8|]

Hi mate on older engines people normally use oil a little thicker 0 w 40 is ok for new / low mileage engines but 5 w 40 suits engine with a few miles on say 50k plus the slightly thicker oil should help with you tickover tappet rattle , its sort of dry sump engine without a remote container there is about 10 L in a 3.6 and the 3.4 would be simular i guess, try some thicker oil next change, i have added an oil treatment to other cars but don't know if i would to my porsche what do others think of this as a cheap fix till next oil change ?

something like Wynns foroil but thre are lots about

Hmm - I think the lumpy tickover is because 3 of your cylinders are in the wrong place...[;)]

lol diesel you know what i mean !! cheers rob ill give that a go next change over , any answers why its a bit lumpy on tick over tho it has just had new plugs and coil packs as well

Mines a little lumpy on tickover, when I say lumpy, I don't mean missfire or nasty violent vibration, the exhaust note is also fine and the revs are constant, but, you can 'feel' it ticking over if you stop and think about it (otherwise you wouldn't notice).

I've had many many cars, with high and low milage with varying size engines, and tbh, most cars if you actually stop and feel for it will shudder a little at times if left idling. Unless you have any popping out of the exhaust or you can feel it shaking considerably or missing then I wouldn't worry about it.

For ref, my car has had recent coil packs, MAF, CPS etc, I compression tested after servicing last month while having the plugs out and replacing spark plug tubes - all was good, and it shows no faults, codes or any signs of poor running, yet you can feel it at idle - I'm not worried about it at all.

Cheers,

Oh, it doesn't tap when starting either, regardless of if I leave it for a few hours, days or weeks and then restart.

I have heard however that it is common for them to tap and even smoke a little on startup if left sat for a bit.

I am running a decent mobil 10w40 though, so a little thicker when cold than the normal stuff the dealer uses, that may help.

Cheers,

My old Carrera had a slightly lumpy tickover in that you will notice the passenger seat vibrate a little. This was worse if you turn off the aircon. It is a common feature assuming that everything else is right. It is never as smooth as a straight six. Also there was a very light tapping when the engine was warm but it disappeared immediately when revved slightly. My engine had 75k miles but regularly serviced with new lambda sensors and MAF.

Easily cured - drive it like you stole it, then it'll never be at tickover. [;)]

(hope the thicker oil works - do let us know if it does)
