I need to replace my 2 front tyres on my SC sports Targa, as they are wearing unevenly due to poor suspension set-up

front 205 55 ZR 16/ 93W
rear 225 50 ZR 16/92W

question is whether I should change the make for a bettter one or should I have the same tyres replaced to keep the car balanced

Also who is the best (cheapest) place to buy from

thanks

Jp

What make are you running now?
I have used My Tyres in the past and just last week for the front and am very pleased with prices and service.
I have also got an order at the moment (toyo proxes) for the rear with Johnsons tyres
price was very good but havent had delivery yet so cant say about service.

Hi JT

would reiterate what Kevin says about using same tyres all round, important on a 911

Myself, I think Bones and definitely Dan (engleflick) are running Kumho Ecstas, I only just had mine fitted friday & have done 125 miles on them so far. Have to say I like them, car feels nice and planted front and rear out of corners, they run very nicely in a straight line with very little of the edginess I was getting on last tyres and they had plenty of front end bite in the damp roads on saturday lunchtime, with no scary brake lock-ups, even tho' I was trying to get them a little out of shape to see what it felt like, didn't happen

I got a set of 4 (ZR) for £200 plus £30 fitting from Graeme Murray in Buckingham, bargain. Email me for his number. Was using Falkens before (same as Andy Jones' 3.2 Carrera) which were also good, and in the wet too, they were just getting old which is why I changed. They are a bit dearer than the Kumhos but Graeme is still the cheapest on those. Looking forward to getting them on the track now, see what they really feel like (when the scenery is a bit further away)

My Tyres source all their tyres in Germany and are taking advantage of good exchange rates just now so very cheap. If you don't want Kumhos or Falkens (you will probably not beat Mr Murray's prices on these) then I believe that there are very few people who can beat the My Tyres prices at the minute

I'd back up John on the Khumos for my type of driving Ithink they are the best Ihave had, having said that their fitting was coincidental with a significant lightening of the car and a change from 16" to 17" rims. I found them edgy and skittish for about 200 miles after that they've stuck like crazy in hot weather and four wheel drift without breaking away. I'd say they are a performance bargain.

sorry made a balls up of posting the messgae, which is why its written twice, am using yokohamas

thanks

Hi,

I would have to agree with both John & Bones, the Kumhos are excellent, the cheapest branded tyres I could find so I went for them from www.mytyres.co.uk, contacted them by phone, they were delivered next day and I got them fitted for £40 at a local tyre dealership. The handling of the car is far imporved as is the ride quality & the road noise has also decreased. (My car had a mixture of Dunlop tyres previously - very worn unmatched)

On the Kumho website, the press release section has a item about Volkswagen fitting Kumhos as standard equipment to the new Polo, quite a good recommendation I would say. (okay a Polo not quite in the same league as a Porsche, but you know what I mean)

Definately have a look at mytyres, also www.blackcircles.co.uk had some better prices for more well known brands so might be worth checking around if you don't go for Kumho's.

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

Cheers Dan.

I'll third (or is it fourth?) the praise for Kumho Ecstas - fitted on my Targe after a mechanic's recommendation, coincidentally just before another post about tyres in which Bones et al said they'd just had some fitted.

Dan - I was running some ropey old Dunlops on the front which came with the car. Sound much like yours were - they just skidded and twitched when pushed hard whereas the Kumhos bite and feel very stable.

With all this publicity I wonder if Kumho ought to be gifting a bit of kit to the Club, or the 'Buddies' garage? [;)]

thanks for the advice

The replacing of the tyres was only one part of my problem, as I had to get the car sorted for its service and MOT.

Not helping is the fact that there are a wide number of Yokohama tyres (profiles) that match the reference digits on the tyres, so apart from confusing me, the prices were all around the £60 mark, which with fitting was close to what my garage wanted

The car has been looked after by GT One in Chertsey, they were pretty competative but also it was just more convenient

I have to have matching tyres and as the rears are healthy looking I have stuck with Yokohamas. When the winter approaches then I may well change to the khumbo's, sounds like they are better for the wet

GT one also set up the steering replaced various bushes and drop links so the car is much lighter and balanced, aslo a bit quieter the 12K service revealed the tappets were a bit on the loose side so they tell me

Also managed to see the car on the ramps so I know the extent of bits of surface rust which I shall attack later in the summer
