Ever since I got my 987.2/2.9/2009 some 4 years ago the engine 'area' smelt hot n bothered after even a simple gentle drive to the Cotswolds etc.
Kind of hot engine smell as if the stress of too long a thrashing had occurred, a hot mix of oil, rubber etc

Today was no different. The car went to Zuffenhaus recently where anything remiss would have been pointed out with the car in the air. There were no such reports apart from that small coolant leak, now seemingly fixed.
Clutch is not slipping, brakes not binding, nothing on the dash and it's been like it for years.

You notice it as you get out the car (engine off but hot) and it is stronger on the passenger side.

Any thought before I delve deeper?
Thanks, Graham.

At times both my old 2.9 Cayman and my current S Cayman emit a hot engine/rubber smell from the vent behind the drivers door. I’ve always understood that to be normal and justifies a smile at the enjoyable drive just experienced. Nothing to worry about, unless you broke the speed limit ??

Graham,

When parked in my snug single garage after a run I can’t say that I’ve noticed anything myself other than the fact that there’s always a lot of heat around the side grilles, and not just on the right side which is venting the engine bay.

I think you’ll find plenty of posts around like Andrew’s describing similar symptoms to those you describe, so most probably nothing to worry about.

Maybe the slight coolant loss had something to do with it!

Normal to have that 'whiff' of rubber even on a spirited legal run, however I must say that when I replaced my brake Textar pads several years ago, on removing them from the packaging they stank of oily fish..... not sure if it was the pads or the packaging but if pads it could have some bearing on what you experience!

My 987.2 often smelt of hot oil, noticeable especially when getting out of the car. Not always after a long drive, sometimes it was worse after a short drive. It did it all throughout the seven years that I had the car, during which it never used any oil.

My 718 GTS4.0 did not smell at all - at first. Now at 4700 miles it has has started smelling worse than the 987.2 ever did, sometimes it's noticeable without getting out of the car eg when stopping at a junction (When the roof is down). It has also used 0.5 litres of oil in 3000 miles. So far no fault has been found by dealer.

Great response and very re assuring.
I t is the same as when I got. It and has not got worst, but I tend to be more aware of the smells in the colder months. Wife always notices...
No oil use ever and no oil residue under the car as Zuffenhaus have never mentioned it all, nothing on the drive.
So, in the back or out of mind.
Jury still out on the coolant.

Same for mine - 2.9 987.2 does that - mostly burning rubber and hot engine smell - but nothing worrying.

(on the plus side, at least you've not got any covid symptoms with loss of smell :)
