I thought all 718 Cayman's were now built at Stuttgart?

Hi guys,

My OPC has just sent me a screenshot of the build progress for my 718 Cayman, build starts on the 5th May.

But one of the dates says 'Entry factory compound Osnabruck'. I thought all 718's were now built in Stuttgart!!

When my OPC originally told me there was going to be a delay to my order he said this was due to a factory relocation, have they moved back to Osnabruck?

The model type is 982121, does this give any hints to where it's built? Or is there somewhere online that I can put in my commission number and see the progress?

Thanks,
Richard.

To the best of my knowledge the Cayman and Boxster ranges are now built in the old Karmann Plant in Osnabruck, Cayennes and Panameras in Leipzig but all Porsche Engines are built in Zuffenhausen, Stuttgart. Transmissions I believe to be produced by ZF.

For any further information you could ask Reading if they can tell you more as per the progress and access to online information as all Porsches produced for the UK market are imported through Porsche Cars Great Britain who are based at Reading.

Just had confirmation from my OPC that my 718 is being built in Osnabruck. Which is a shame, I was hoping it was going to be built in Stuttgart as I was planning on visiting the factory when it was being built.

I contacted the factory earlier today and they've said that from this month 718's will be built in Stuttgart and Osnabruck due to high demand for the cars.

I'm hoping they're going to build it with the same quality that the Stuttgart cars are produced with.

Don't worry about it Richard. All 981-series Caymans were built at Osnabruck and I've not heard of anyone complaining about the build quality.

It may even be better than Stuttgart where they build all the sportscars on the same lines whereas at Osnabruck the line workers are assembling only one type of vehicle.

Other points in favour of the Osnabruck site are that their workforce are probably Karmann coachwork trained and experienced and also Porsche Quality supervised, Karmann used to build some very specialised versions of cars for VW and others which were looked on by many as better than getting one produced by VW, being overseen by the Quality people from Porsche is likely to be tighter controlled than Porsche Zuffenhausen as it will effectively be a two stage quality cover the local team and the HQ overseers.

I spent a significant amount of my working life in quality in the Aerospace Engine Industry and once things were sorted on producing all parts they would become sub contract supply and the quality cover was very tight, no doubt Porsche will be similar.

On another point sightly off topic, I later worked for Jaguar at a time when they had got hold of a 987turbo engine and cut it up to see how the quality and manufacturing techniques, design etc worked and some were not impressed as they thought it looked very poor finish on the outside, this from an engineer working in a company which was having engines assembled by Ford, Peugeot, Renault etc hidden under plastic covers as if the outside appearance matters! It's how well they do their job.

It will be helpful to see VIN number (excl last four digits) to see which factory built it.

Is the 11th character "S" or "K"

I think that the Golf Cabrio is built at the Osnabruck plant and roof components for some other VAG cars are also manufactured there.

Jeff

Sciroccos used to be be built at Osnabruck with as you say Jeff the carboy models.

I test drove a 718 Boxster this morning and there was a 718 Cayman at the event. The Cayman's 11th character in the VIN was an "S" signifying Stuttgart.
