Hi,

I am looking for a decent exhaust to give me a little more sound and vroom on my 944S What about having a powerflow built ? any help or recommendations pls ?

Cheers

I wouldn't touch powerflow - just a bunch of pipe sections tacked together with lumpy welds by a glorified tyre fitter and designed only to make a noise and (hopefully) not hit the bottom of the car.

There are a few options for proper systems that have had a bit of design put into them like Essential Styling (Janspeed) or Hayward & Scott. They aren't exactly cheap though.

I don't know about vrooom, but this will give you a nice growl (well, purr!)
Not available for non-cat versions of course.

Aw, cute...

Actually, I am also considering a new exhaust for my 944S -- I will need a new back box by for the upcoming MOT (current one is shot to bits, apparently), and was wondering about getting something 'nice'. The bit sticking out the back (down pipe?) is slightly rusty, so something that looks shiny would be nice, I don't want to make a louder noise, but I found a clip of a Janspeed vs vanilla exhaust on the internet somewhere the other day and I liked the more refined 'purr' it gave. But then Janspeed are also £££, and I presume that would mean replacing the whole exhaust.
Is stainless steel worth it?

Apart from the tailpipe your current exhaust IS stainless, that's why the back box is the only bit that's cream crackered.

If you care what the bit you can see looks like then you want it to be stainless and if you care how long the system lasts you want it to be stainless as well. I believe you can fit the back part of the Janspeed system to the rest of your standarrd one so you don't need to replace it all (at once).

The downpipe is the pipe that comes down from the manifold (or header) on the engine to the exhaust proper under the car BTW.

Certainly the case with the one for the Turbo.

Another thing to note is when ESS & Janspeed developed their exhausts they deliberately kept them below 98 dB so as not to get you thrown off on track days.

All stainless steel exhausts sound a bit naff when you first put them on. This my be due to thinner section tube, or the harmonics of the tube, they do improve with age though.

How loud is the standard exhaust?

I found there wasn't a huge difference in price (less than £100) between a standard stainless backbox and the ESS Janspeed backbox. The ESS backbox certainly sounds much better, especially above 5k rpm, and it isn't much louder than the standard exhaust but is much, much throatier. I'm sure the sound on a normally aspirated car will be even better.

Got a ss back box off ebay, very good value at £100, mirror polished, half the weight , sounds a bit louder and alot deeper.

I dont think it is worth spending alot unless you change the whole system and then tune the engine to match the pipe.
