I want one s/h but scared !

Hi

Cayennes now can be had for around 10k in decent condition. I have always hankered after one and as already a Boxster owner wanted a second family to be Porsche ! But need advice before taking plunge:

Looking around 12k mark what are the best options and what are the pitfalls ? Some items I have noted already:

First the problems :
1. 3.2 versus 4 litre ? Is the mpg/ less wear/ less complications worth it ? Which one is more reliable ?
2. How bad is the mpg on a 4 litre S ?
3. Engine bore wear - new engines needed on some - what to check for ?
4. Drive prop shaft
5 Ignition coils and coolant hoses
Right got all that out of the way, now the best options to have :

1. Air suspension
2. Xenon lights
3. Sat Nav
4. Other -

Any advice most appreciated.

 

Things to check

Nearly 2003 reg cars were initial dealer stock, so well spec'd

Fire car up listen for tapping sound that doesn't go away, could be bore liner c£1,000.
Check coolant levels, Check for coolant smell and check wheather it has had the replacemnet pipes cost c£700+v.
Drive car and kick down at least 2 gears ,if it bangs walk away its seemingly the valve chest in gearbox.
Propshaft is a rattling noise when pulling away, you can replace with recondition one for under £500 so not a big worry.
Check for Oil leaks
Check for Bearing noises.
Check plugs have been changed in the services, quite costly also means that ignition coils would have been checke and replaced if required.

Fuel consumption is going to be under 20mpg, going by everything I have read Fuel consumption is very similar for all models, 3.2 is under powered.

Ref suspension I found the std was more than exceptable so its down to test drives, you will probably want the parking sensors and folding mirrors, heated seats are good in winter, check whether sat nave has the telephone module. If you need the tow bar it ws an expensive inbuilt option.
 
The 4.5 litre S wont return more than 12mpg around town, 22 on a run

Pretty much as stated by Gordon on everything else, except the costings!

Water pipe update will cost you £1000 all in, bore liner wear can pretty much write the car off
 
I'm going through the same process as you, looking for that illusive good 'un!

For what it's worth, here are my thoughts:
1. Go for the middle ground, the 4.5S. 3.2 is too slow and gives very little advantage in MPG. Turbo just has that extra risk of too much to go expensively wrong in a 5 to 7 year old car!
2. History is everything! Walk away if there are any gaps, or not serviced by OPC or recognised specialist.
3. Other options? Cruise, Bose and 20" wheels do it for me.[:D]

I think Gordon has covered the more technical / mechanical side of things, so other than that.....happy hunting!

Out of curiosity I had a quick look in autotrader and what a lot of metal you can get for your money

There is even a 1 owner sub 40k mile one not far from your budget
 
Thanks very much for the advice. I was driven in one at Brands Hatch Porsche (OPC) driver when the car first appeared, and we 4 wheel drifted with 5 on board ! It was amazing and the build quality (at least on this newish once) exceptional when you consider it was a demonstrator that was being treated quite harshly. Loved every bit of it and I think as a luxury 4x4 is exceptional value for money. Would have loved a diesel but they are too few and too new. Anyway I am in the hunt now !

I have owned a '53 plate Cayenne Turbo for just over a year and love it, but have had to spent a bit on it, as you would expect on any high performance car.

I would not even think about a 3.2, and with the S and Turbo going for similar money you get a much faster Turbo and it comes with all the extras. From what I've seen it will be very similar on mpg to the S as if you're not booting it's not using the turbos so is the same engine. In real terms my Turbo does between 250 - 350 miles per tank, though I've had more and I've had less!
Don't buy one if you're doing big miles but even if you do 10k miles per year it'll only cost you £1 - 1.5k more in fuel per year than any other family car.

You are buying at the right time as I've not been able to sell mine for what I want since October when I quit my job to concentrate on my business. I bought mine in March 2011 for £14k with 90k miles which I thought was a pretty keen price then and imagined it would hold it well. I've tried to sell for between £11 - £14k on various websites, the last being just over a week ago on ebay when I stuck it on auction with a reserve of £11k, it reached £8.6k at close. Since October I've had a few offers of £10k, nothing more. It's in great condition with a whopping history so can't see why it hasn't sold other than the market which is on the floor so I'm keeping it.

I've replaced the coolant pipes - as they were plastic/ceramic they took Autofarm longer than expected to remove the old ones as they had stuck in place. Parts are only £300 but it needed over 10 hours to sort so the bill was nearer £2k.

The electrics very occasionally flash up with warnings when nothing is wrong as have had it checked - front side lights and air suspension.

One coil pack went and the engine was miss-firing, £30 for the part and 10mins to fit by me was all it took.

Get one that's had the coolant pipes done and take other advice on this thread. If you want to look at mine I'm based between Oxford and Bicester, although it's not for sale anymore it would be good for you to compare it to others you look at.
