I want to look like a racer.

After spending a day with you hardened racers I though the least I could do is try and look like one

Just been looking at the Heigo web site and I'm not sure what I should be looking at.

I want an ally cage that bolts into all existing holes.

Does any one happen to know the part number for said item?

Oh and you'll all be shocked to learn that the RS is sitting in my garage and it's STILL DIRTY.

don't forget the classic look..

looks like part no 516 024 is the one that uses the original bolt holes. Depending on your chassis you may or may not have the bolt holes there. But don't quote me. [8D]Looking at the picture it looks as if the cage picks up on the rear belt fixings (lower outer) and front belt fixings (lower outer) and center tunnel fixings.
From what I understand most aluminium cages are for show only and constitute little to strength or safety.

I think Des has the bolt in cage you are after, hopefully that has a part number on it to confirm you order the correct part.

Heigo p/n 516 024 does use the original seat belt mounting holes, as does p/n 516 026 (which has x-diagonals). They are both available in steel or aluminium, but I believe only the steel ones are FIA homologated. I recently took delivery of one, but have since discovered that my car does not have mounting holes for rear seat belts (proves it's a real RS!!), hence my other thread looking for recommendations on fitters. I'm tempted not to bother with the cage, because I don't want to put new holes in the car.

Thanks Guys

516 024 is the one that I reckoned too. Couldn't quite make out whether the other one had the same mounting points.

I know my car has the seat belt points on the tunnel but not too sure about the outer rears although I'm sure the German reg docs stated my car as having a rear cage fitted at some point.

Sundeep....I've passed the stage of wearing overalls and boots when I don't have a clue[:D]

Clubsport.....I think Dessies cage is moody. It's got a kink in the diagonal......Or maybe thats Des thats got the kink......Whatever , both look like they've seen some action.[;)]

All the shells have the holes from the manufacturing process before they are RS'd. The process of RS-ing them adds some seam welding and then the holes on the 964 where covered by spot welded plates before painting. With the 993 RS the holes were covered with grommets before painting.

So fitting said cage varies slightly depending on whether you just need to remove grommets or spot welded plates. If you have holes already then it's had new ones drilled or the welded plates removed or its an imposter [8D]

In my 964 the outside holes appear to be covered from the outside by steel plates. I take it that these are the "spot welded plates" you mention? On the tunnel side there doesn't appear to be any holes, just circular indentations in the bodywork. In any case, how would I get behind these holes to attach plates with captive nuts to put the bolts into?

Remove the small plastic under tray covering the gearbox area and you can then access the underside of transmission tunnel from underneath the car. Best with a ramp really but doable with jack and stands. Take appropriate health and safety precautions of course.

Completely wrong. After inspection I've found that I have the outer holes plugged with a plastic thingy and no holes on the centre tunnel......Think I'm gonna abort mission....too much Omar.

Your car has been once a very serious racer no doubt Lee with your cabin mounted isolator and now removed cage, it certainly did'nt belong to a granny who only picked up her milk on a Sunday morning on a gravel drive! Got to get your cage look at my fixings and speak to Sean John who fitted it. While your at it get rid of those silly blanks and get the brake cooloing ducts as well some harnesses's.............. it's an RS Lee................

Mines the same Lee. Behind the plastic thingy is the captive nut. The tunnel is easily drilled and bolted. Well ok maybe easy is a little lie[;)]

Des........Don't think my car was owned by a stuntman or would be racer[:D]. There's no evidence of holes for harnesses or Carlos Fandango cages and it was never owned by Stevie Wonder cos it hasn't got headlamp covers either.

Laurence.......It sounds like I need to rip the carpet up to get to drill the holes for the tunnel brace.....Think I'm going soft now and getting cold feet.......Just lovingly washed and caressed my car and tucked it away in cotton wool.[>:]

Thanks for this. Are the outside holes accessable from the wheel arches?

Lee - lifting the carpet isn't too difficult. I'll let you know how I get on with attaching a cage, if I don't give up beforehand.

The outer holes I think from memory are on a double skinned part so err no. And they are in the quater panel rather than the wheel arch.

Can't believe that Lee....jet washed the RS thoroughly.........anyway this is what a racer looks like......maybe your new hairdresser can recreate the early 70's look with a bit more Brylcream...........
