I want to replace speakers

Hi all,

I would like to upgrade/replace my current speakers. I have never had to do this before so not quite sure what to do. I am used to driving modern cars with decent sound quality system as standard and would like to replicate this in my 3.2. Currently, the door speakers can't cope with too much base as they distort easily.

Could someone in the know please advise.

Thanks!

You mean there is something better to listen to than a flat six symphony????[:D][:D][:D]

Joking aside I did the same a couple of years ago, first I upgraded the head unit and removed the horrid multiplayer in the boot.
The spakers I got lucky on, a friend of mine who used to fit high-end systems in high-end cars had some NEW old stock. I managed to get speakers from the era into the existing holes with no cutting or mods needed in the car. (pioneers in the doors and jbl's in the rear.) The front & rear speaker grills were the same as the ones taken out that had gotten dented and chipped over time - this inproved both the look of the car and the sound.
However the factory fitted tweeters in the doors were another matter - we had to cut the original tweeters from their baskets and then glue newer tweeters into them after cutting them out of their baskets - this was purely to retain the original look. I have asked my pal for others before if he has nay other 911 type speakers before - he has stuff packed away all over the place and has never found any other - but I will ask him again for you. If he has none I suggest regular searches on ebay for some period speakers, not nre design stuff that just looks like a fish out of water in an IB.
My car is a cab and over the years from giving the speakers too much wellie - all the cones were shot and the sound was awful. At least in a Coupe you can create decent accoustics from the rear parcel shelf install - suggest JBL 6x9's if you can get a set - your orig grill should fit these with minor or no mods to either shelf or baskets or grills.
The fronts depends on what you have in but try and keep the period look. Sony Xplode and similar are too rocket ship in their look for a classic car - IMO.
Cheers

Sorry to disagree hear with the 6x9 thing. I happen to know lots about audio systems and sound quality. When it comes to making best of the space you have then you need to decide what sort of sound quality you are after. Do you like base? or just crystal clear loud music played as it was recorded.

To obtain the best sound quality the front mounted speakers idealy should be angled to the driver. Same for the tweeters or ideally the best place for these will be in the headlining by the sunvisors. This will give you a peramid effect with all focul point on the centre of the car. With regards to rear speakers in a 911 this is not neccessary. Lots of people spend out on half decent front and rear speakers with such a small air space to occupy. I recommend spending out on a good quality set of components for the front rather than four speakers in the car. You will obtain a muh better sound from one set of good speakers as opposed to four half decent. Depending on if your after base maybe install a sub, again for the airspace in the car you wont need anything bigger than an airfree 8-10" shallow sub. Thesse can be installed in the rear shelf, an amp can be installed in the luggage area.
I have some pictures of the speaker installs in my 911 but the files to big to upload.
Drop me an email at wayneb911@yahoo.co.uk and i will forward them across to you. Will try and shrink the file down in the mean time. Anyone interested email me to i will be happy to send them out.

Wayne I too have a lot of exp. with installs, as i said in my post I have a very good friend who worked for the top installers in europe!! He has put the most amazing ICEpackages into cars for 25 years.....

BUT my post was how to get the optimum sound without altering the original look of the car from a factory install - for this purpose 6x9's are ideal!

In the past I have had cars with many thousands of £££££'s worth of audio installed but after moding the interior to accomodate - which is fine but I prefer a period look rather than a more modern approach - also I think an over spend on audio os pointless - mine is only on when we tour long distances - as i prefer the flat six sound on its own!!!
Cheers

Hi

Sorry if it appeared i was passing judgemet that was not the case. I chose the installs i made as i was not after an original look but something that still reembled a standard look to it, albeit not original to porsche.

No probs Wayne - I was really keen to upgrade the sound quality but make it appear like it had never had an upgrade - the only failing was in the replacement of the headunit... this was not anything like teh orig. however it has an ipod hardwired into the glove box that is controlable vis the head unit - that helps to reduce the number of discs stored in the door bins - LOL

Could someone in the know please advise.

What's your starting point? Do you have the hi-fi pack (amp under the driver's seat, bass/mid and separate tweeters in the doors, rear shelf units)?

I have upgraded the speakers in mine but wanted to keep a factory appearance. I used Genesis units in the doors (by chance the Genesis tweeters are a perfect tight fit in the factory tweeter enclosure) and so JL Audio units in teh rear shelf which fit under the factory grilles. The amp under the seat is disconnected (modern head units exceed its specification anyway.)

Hi guys,

Thanks for the information so far.

I really want to keep the original look of the car. I would like to keep the speakers hidden behind the door speaker panels. The rears dont seem to have any covers on them at all. Was this always the case?

I don't have the original headunit as it has been replaced with a Sony sometime in the past.

If there is an amp, where would I find it?

Told you I was new to this!

Not sure there was an amp on your year. I find that the best place to fit the amp would be in the luggage area. Its out the way then.
Here is a picture of the front speaker system i have in my car. Tweeters were fitted latter once i decided where i wanted them. The door cards i made myself to the design i wanted as i felt the ribbed effect dated the look i wanted to achieve.

If you have one the amp will be under the driver's seat.

Do you have separate tweeter units in the doors. No covers on your shelf speakers isn't right. Can you post a pic?

Just had a look and the parcel shelf and the speakers there are Alpines. Not standard I am guessing.

The doors have 2 speakers. A larger of the speakers are lower down and there are smaller ones above.

I will check of amp next time I am in car
