I'm not going to pretend that my car will ever be a show winner but i do want it to look a little different if i ever get around to going to a meet i'd like to stand out, so here is my proposal,

Recently there has been a few manufacturers that have embraced the satin black paint job one most notably the Brabus Merc here

What do you think, If i do get it done would is there any point in clearcoating it?

If its water based paint then youll have no choice. It wont suit the car though: in my opinion.

I've seen Rangies, Mini's and even a Gemballa BiTurbo in this finish..... I'm afraid to say for my money the all look absoultely hideous ... but thats whey we have choices ...[:)]

btw if you want more images let me know, had to severly crop this one to accomodate the file size limitations.

I guess as per Simon's suggestion, a vinyl wrap would get the satin effect that you desire.

Most satin cars I've seen just put me off them. I have a friend of mine trying to paint his car in a camo paint job...

What defines a decent car? This one was purchased for BIG £'s in this condition? Everyone's taste is different, hence we are indivudals, And NO I don' like it personally .... but it its one hell of a car apart from the finish .

this is exactly what I have planned for my turbo. I have a friend who does th evinyl wraps, he's going to give it the matt look. I've seen it on a 944 before and I thought it looked amazing...

I've seen it on an Evo and a new GTR and both looked good imo. I think the cars have to look imposing or at least have presence to pull it off, kinda like white does as well, again imo. Go for it, I'd like to see how it looks!

I'd go the vinyl route, it can look excellent and a wrap can be a lot cheaper than a nice paint job (£1,200 seems to be about the going rate for a good wrap). You don't have to worry about stone chips and can change back when selling or you get bored of the look. The only issue is I'd want to sort any rust out before, as covering it up is probably asking for trouble. For what it's worth I'd like to see a matt 944, I think it could look excellent, but suspect you'd need painted wheels to complete the appearance.

You can add a matting agent to the clearcoat.
Not all the satin/matt look cars around are wraps!

If you want to try the matt finish 'on the cheap' then simply dull down your panels using a box of these superfine 4000 grit discs from Mirka at circa £20 a box

Wet them and then by machine or hand it will take the shine right off any paint finish. The gloss will come back with a quick machine polish

My father has a cast iron woodburner in that finish

Personal view is that a standard paint finish is most attractive but this colour is fashionable just like metal flake in the 70's and pearl flip in the 80's.

It's personal taste. It depends if you're doing it for yourself- at the end of the day if you like it no matter how many others don't then so what and all power to you. If you are doing it to make a car that will appeal to others then I think this sort of thing - at the moment at least, is a bit way out there and judging by the responses so far, is a look that hasn't quite caught on with the masses. But who know's, it could be the next cool thing and you could be a trail blazer.

Personally I can imagine it might look pretty good. It seems to be all the rage with things like Mountain Bikes at the moment and it looks pretty cool on those. I like Paul's suggestion because if you dont like it you can just polish it up again and youll end up with a nice shiny finish again.

Just as a possible alternative. I'm not usually a fan of stripes on cars, but I do like the stripes on the F430 Scudaria's where the stripe is a sort of satin/matt finish of the body colour with a border of a different shade. And I like the look where the stripes taper to a point at the nose of the car rather than just continue till they drop off the edge. I think a 944 could pull this look off.

Go for it in the vinyl wrap so you could reverse it if you didn't like it. I think it would look great but then again, I am very new school. How about a carbon wrap. I've seen this on a car and the results were amazing.

I was toying with carbon wrap, but i didnt dare mention it on here i thought it might be way out there! i am also very new school in my approach to cars, if there were carbon parts readily available in this country i might have just gone carbon :)

I'm glad you didn't mention it as otherwise people might extract the urine. Carbon panels are great if they are carbon. A wrap just looks like you wanted carbon but couldn't afford it. I've not seen doors or front wings but there are carbon bonnets and sunroofs available for the 944.

I was admiring an NSX's carbon engine bay brace the other day, looked a seriously expensive bit of kit till I saw a bit of exposed metal at one of the edges... This must have been real stick on carbon sheet and looked completely convincing, if I hadn't have seen the blemish I'd have never known, so I suspect if the raw wrap material was of the same quality then it could look good. I do think it would look a bit tragic over the whole car though, some of us have the real thing and choose not to flaunt it [;)] although I probably would have if I'd have thought of it earlier :ROFLMAO:
