Ideas please on cause of noise on rear of newly purchased 924S

Newly purchased 1989 reg. 924S had knocking/thump from rear when changing gear or taking foot off throttle especially in lower gears. Car is very clean and tidy with full history but has been standing for some time having done 84,000 miles. I got it for a good price as I realise there are some mechanical issues. Any suggestions on likely causes before I take it to a local Porsche specialist as it needs an annual service as well. Apart from this it drives extremely well.

Is it likely to be either the CV joints, transmission mounts or the axle itself???? There is no axle noise (as I had on my previous 924S EUV 924 for all of the12 years I had it before it was stolen).

Hello Patricia!
Welcome to the forum.

Well it sounds like the clutch is on its way out - at least that's what I remember with my own 2 litre.

2nd opinion anyone?

Every time you change gear, in other words every time the torque on the gear box is reversed. Does the thud occur as the clutch is released? If it does then it might pay you to look at the transmisison mounts. One may have separated. I am not an "S" expert but some basic engineering principles apply whatever the vehicle. Let us know.

Thanks to you both for your replies. Does it mainly when the clutch is depressed but also does in in low gears when you lift off the throttle. However, does not do it when the throttle is lifted off in the higher gears.

PH Sportscars at Shardlow think it is probably part of the clutch has broken up. (It changes gear without any problems and there is no obvious clutch slip).

Luckily I negotiated a good reduction in the price of the car which will cover the cost of a new clutch and an annual service.

Hopefully, it will get done next week so I can attend the R08 event at Chatsworth on the 2nd July. I'll let you know what they find.

Thanks again.

Patricia.

It was the clutch. The rubber component had sheering and the clutch plate was cracked. However, when tested there was still some play when changing gear. This has been traced to the gearbox and was the probable cause of the damage to the clutch. I am having another gearbox fitted and hopefully it will be done in time for me to attend Chatsworth with the car on Sunday.

P H Sportscars at Shardlow have done me a very good deal on the repairs so the car still stands me at the right price even after having the clutch and gearbox done.

Thanks for your replies.
