Identifying radiators

Hi guys,
I'm sure someone out there, more knowledgeable than me, can answer this query. I'm a new facelift 996 C4 (cab) owner so please excuse this question which may seem a bit dumb but here goes. Until this wekend at Chatsworth I hadn't realised the radiators at the front of my car are different from other 996 cars. I have an exposed radiator in the centre of the front bumper. What is this for? Is it because my car is a Tiptronic or 4 wheel drive or what ? and if so does it contain ATF or water?

Centre radiators were fitted to Tiptronics and X51-engined cars. On Tips there is a heat exchanger on the gearbox which uses the water cooling circuit to cool the ATF. This is controlled by a vacuum valve which opens and closes the water to the heat exchanger on demand from the Tip control module. The extra rad at the front just provides the additional cooling capacity required, and runs in series with the outer two rads..

Thanks Richard. The reason I started looking was that I am about to put some grilles in the front as protection and was considering getting the Zunnsport ones, but they dont do them for my set up except as an expensive one off. Thanks to the technical articles, I'm going to have a go at making and fitting my own. Regards

Dead easy. If I can do it, anyone can. I'd post a picture but don't know how to!! Sheet of black grill cost me £22 from Halfords and couple of hours work. Now looks the business. John

Thanks John and Jane. You're right, it was easy. I bought the self same black mesh from Halfords, only mine was £24. There was just enough in the one sheet thanks to making up a cardboard template first. It really does look good as well.
As an aside, while I had the front off I thought I would give the radiators a good clean. When I moved the A/C evaporators I was totally "gobsmacked" by the amount of rubbish trapped between them and the coolant rads. Someone on the forum suggested there might be overheating problems with the mesh fronts fitted, with that amount of rubbish in there I'm surprised it didnt overheat before!
Regards
