Idle Control Valve

Can someone tell me where it is located on my 82 lux and the best way of removing it and cleaning it please.

In the 944S (16 V) it is under the inlet manifold. Prepare to have to remove the fuel rail, injectors etc etc, and the entire inlet system to get at it if it is the same as the 944 Lux. And when you get it out to clean it... DON'T STICK A SCREW DRIVER IN IT. Some one had done that to mine and had crunched the aluminium closer inside it. I bought a replacement unit from Bert Gear at Berlyn Services. Made a massive difference to drivabilty. I am not sure if it was jammed half open, half shut or what, but the new one sorted out some very annoying idling habits.

Another tip is to not yank pipes off without noting their routing, and what things are connected to, as there are alot of pipes running about in that area. Mine where all numbered with white paint by the guy who had rebuilt and refitted the head for me. Useful.

Can't help with the lifespan question, but I think the ICv is the same (or very similar) part as used on VW's of that era.

They used to get clogged up with tar and other such junk, but were easily enough cleaned by spraying a LOT of carb cleaner through them. Keep on spraying until it runs clear ...

I appreciate the issues with access and the difficulty of changing them, but if you can get to it enough to spray it, this could be a diagnostic test/possible cheap fix.

yep, common problem with the ISV on VW Golfs...
I'd take off the valve and soak it in white spirit (nothing stronger) overnight and then watch all the black crud come out... repeat until clean.
Also check for any air leaks in hoses as this can cause similar probs and the ISV may be okay. They should last for years as they are sooooooooo simple.
Try taking off the sensor on the ISV when the engine is cold and when hot to see if it makes any difference to the idle, then you'll know if it's the ISV or a leaking hose.
Should be easyish to remove as you can pull the hoses about a bit and it should be held on with hose clamps... not jubilee clips.

I've had one on both my Turbo and S2 over the years and I am sure they were only a £150 part. Both times the mechanics managed to get them out without removing the manifold so labour costs were much lower than they originally estimated.

Find an Indy with tiny hands [:)] JZ Machtech and Promax both found a tny mechanic to do mine :ROFLMAO:
 
Thanks again. I'll send a few Indy's an ink pad, a blank piece of paper, and an SAE to assess hand size...

Or maybe not [:D]

Seriously though, it's good to know it is possible without removing the manifold.
