Idle Hunting - Trouble Ahead

Hi All
I've noticed this past few times I took the car out she was not idling steady - revs were going up and down 600 to 1100 odd on a constant cycle - once warm no problem !

I was thinking of the idle stabilising valve and "I'll sort that come winter" ! Today I took the two offspring to the playground and after I started the car all was well - then it was like I had turned her off - she just died !

Got the spare DME relay in - no go - found that there was no spark and the coil wasn't getting triggered so fingers are now pointed at the RPM and Reference sensors !

I didn't get a chance to check both sensors ! I'll get a go Tommorrow - before I start am I correct to go for both sensors? Or have I missed anything obvious ? Would the hunting idle on cold startup have been the warning sign of impending failure ?

First time in 19 years she has misbehaved like this and left me walking - she did stop next door to a local garage so she could have let me down in a worse place !!

I’m not sure hunting has anything to do with ref sensors, it’s more a over compensating mixture issue

if I read right the sensors are a pain in the butt to change, so I would only want to do the job once.

If you do need to change them, use BMW 80's era cam position sensors 6 pot engine, same thing only the lead is an inch longer, a quarter of the price as OPC and ECP, I paid around £40 each genuine Bosh parts, change both whilst at it, I did so both good for some time now hopefully.
If you get stuck shout up and I will dig the part number out.
I don't think this is your problem though ?

You should post that in the alternate part fitment thread in the faq - if it isn't there already!

Pretty sure I mentioned it somewhere but may be another forum ? I will check and post if it is not there, found the info on Rennlist, same part number as 944 but the last 2 digits were different which I reckon must indicate length of lead, mine have been on for 12 months now, as said exactly the same thing apart from lead length.

If the hunting occurs again try disconnecting the AFM - my cab did that after a long period of not running - piulling the plug and re-seating was enough to stop it - the total cut out may be sensors or immoboliser related
