I never realised just how roomy these old 944s were...

Have finally decided to get my leather seats revived at http://www.leathercare-renovations.co.uk/ , whose work I have witnessed at first hand and it is superb. I am still toying with the idea of following Ben and John Sims down the lightweight buckets and half cage route and having manhandled those oh so heavy electric thrones out of the car, I can vouch for the savings to be had! Here are some 'before' pics of the seats and I'll post the 'after' ones, once I get them back [;)].

As you can see, 137k miles and 18 years of wear plus an indifferent attempt at a 'respray' of the Linen leather in the past, have all left their mark - the same could be said of the owner...[;)] The seats had clearly been out before as some muppet in the past had rounded off some of the allen bolts holding the seats in - that just provided me with an excuse to pop down to Machine Mart and buy some stud/screw extractors to play with. Simple pleasures....[:D]

At the same time I have partially dismantled the front end of the car to get rid of the worst of the stone chipped areas - might remove the PU too and get that sprayed at the same time. Stripping the front bits 'n bobs off the car reminded me how enjoyable it is to work on a high quality mecano kit like this - very little evidence of corroded fasteners, with only the front bumper struts needing a squirt of Waxoyl (other rust preventative waxes are available[;)]) to protect them.

Nick, You must have a very understanding Missus, how do you get away with having the car in the lounge?

(Or do you just have carpet in the Garage[:D][:D][:D])

Hmm, just wish I had a 2/4 post lift in my garage - would make things so much easier![;)]

Did you have plate lift on the calipers to sort out too?

Nick,
It is really strange seeing your car. I have a h reg in red with the same interior and I removed my seats last week to be refurbed. So my car looks the exact same at the moment. I cant believe how heavy the seats were. Was also thinking of bucket seats but was wanting to try and keep the car standardish and hopefully the seats will look nice when refurbed. Keeping standard is difficult as I have already change the wastegate, chips, air filter, fpr, ebc. The rear seats are heavy aswell. If I was getting buckets would get a 968 rear seat delete. Surely that with the front seats must save about 50-60kg. Trouble is that then I start thinking about fibreglass wings, bonnet, remove air con. Difficult decisions.

Quite fancy a pair of 968 Recaros in mine + dumping the rears, I don't think it would stop there though.

It is always hard to stop with these cars especially once you get the disease. The cobra suzaka's look really nice. There was a set on ebay in black leather

Quite a lot of money though.

That's the trouble with the modifying bug, even worse than swine flu.....![:D]

Hi Nick,
I would suggest giving the intercooler and the area underneath a good clean. Not that it may be necessary, but just a while-in-there job...[:)]

I can vouch for that.

In my current project (Golf Mk 1 track car)the seats weighed 17 kilo`s each - using a basic spring balance so not ever so accurate. The Cobra Clubman seats (I got them for peanuts and will fit something better over the winter rebuild I`m planning - having said that they arent bad but the two lap strap hole mouldings dig in your hips a bit) installed with the subframes I made were 7 kilos each so thats 20 kilos saved in my little Golf so I`ll wager its probably over 30 kilos in your car if you dump the OEM seats. That`ll certainly offset a roll hoop and probably a full cage also.

Aaarrgghhh, must not listen, must not listen......

Enough temptation already...[8|][8|][:D][:D][:D][:D]

You can save over 20 kilogrammes by simply reverting to series one type seats and a little more if theyre cloth. Theyll fit using the original series two runners. Replace the 19kg battery with an Oddysey, treat your tyres and ditch the spare wheel and tools, fit a polycarbonate 'glass' to a replacement hatch and swap the bonnet for a GRP part and youll have lost 80-odd kilogrammes. Replace both front seats with a pair of properly light seats and youll have lost closer to 100 kilogrammes; which is the difference between having a big 16 stones bloke in the car all the time and not...

eta: the finished weight saving includes the seat back, which I omitted to mention. If you have a split rear then youll save less, of course

hi nick that's right mate abit of plate lift..and i wanted to paint the disc and fit new pads..and took the seats out cleaned the carpets and removed the porsche immobiliser.fitted some hids headlights..just need to do the rear brakes now nick..
