If the camshafts were removed....

Would that make replacing/checking the IMS easier?

And what is the part number 996 105 051 58 for?

Its some sort of tensioner, but what exactly I don't know?
 
When you say changing the IMS, what do you mean? The seal, the bearing, or the shaft itself?

That part is the Variocam solenoid from 3.4 engines. It adjusts the cam timing by acting on a tensioner on the timing chain, effectively shortening it.
 
Its just that my car 10k ago, had both variocam replaced and each time had tensioners as well.

I guess I was just wondering if they would have taken the opportunity to look at the IMS while they were in there.

No, they wouldn't normally have checked anything to do with the IMS. Unless, of course, they dropped the engine out, in which case it would have been sensible to at least check the RMS, IMS seal, and clutch.
