Ignition Barrel Problem

Experienced a problem today with the ignition. Car started fine, but when I came to stop the engine, the barrel turned with the key, and although I did manage to get the key out with a bit of fiddling, it had not killed the supply (ie. radio and bluetooth still on, and remote locking would not work due to that.

Decided to lock car with key, and it gave out the single bleep.

So two questions:

1) What is the cause of the problem, and how easy is it to rectify
2) Any obvious issues using the car in the manner described until I can get the issue resolved

Any help appreciated as always.

The ignition switch on the back of the lock barrel has a nasty habit of breaking up inside. It is a very common problem, and I did a DIY for it which is in the members only Technical Articles forum. I'll email you a copy.

richard can you email me a copy to please, this happens to on my other car, a boxster.
I put the key i and turn the lights on but the heaters dont come on, the windows wipers dont work and radio wont come on, then i turn it like 1mm back and bingo everything is fine, very annoying.

Send me an email via the forum, and I'll attach them to a reply.

Forget that! I've just found your email address (assuming it is still the sonicM3 one).
