Ignition Barrel Removal

Good afternoon all,

I am hoping someone can point out what I am doing wrong regarding removal of an ignition barrel.

My 99(T) 996 Cabriolet has been suffering from intermittent starting issues. I have read a lot about ignition switch problems (I had changed a few years back), yet the issue has returned.

Basically, key in, turn to start and nothing. Try again and again, nothing (except airbag and roll over warnings lights come on for a few seconds). Then it will start.

I am considering changing the switch again, but I want to eliminate a worn barrel/steering lock interface, as when I out the key in there is a lot of slack when turning the key. I can move the key at least 10-15 degrees without it moving to stage 1.

I have tried to remove the barrel as per all the instructions online, and no joy.

I have turned the key and got a slim Allen key in as far as possible and it will not come out.

What am I doing wrong? Anyone get a video of removal?

It will be the plastic ignition switch itself which is located at the base of the barrel that will be the problem, not the barrel and no need to remove the barrel, I see from your profile that you are a guest so you will not be able to access the 996 tech info which shows you how to do it. ( another good reason to join the club)
It’s an easy diy and the following link shows how. The part is available from Euro or GSF parts for about £20
