Ignition Barrel

Hi
Has anybody had any problems with the iginition Barrel? My key is suddenly not going in and out easily and the key isnt returning to the run position when started I have to manually move it and then when turning off the barrel doesnt return to the off position completely and you can remove the key but the car still thinks its in. I am guessing the Barrel itself is not good, is it possible to get them refurbed anywhere?
Thanks
Sean

Yes, it's one of those "996 consumeables". Get it changed. I had a new one fitted recently parts cost about £20. I'm told that without the correct tool it's a brute of a job but then I go looking for jobs which will keep younger people than me in gainful employment and skills practice.

If you were in East Anglia I'd give you the name of a small indie who does have the tool but maybe they've all got the tool. Charlie Wildridge 07595911959 did it while I waited the ten minutes or so.

Pete is describing the switch on the back of the unit, ten minutes is good, I would say 20! Easy enough DIY, plenty on the web, headlight switch knob off and go through the vent, I cut down an old terminal driver to undo the 2 screws.

Sounds like it could be the housing unit though at £135+

Hi Sean
I would bet it's the ignition switch itself that's the issue, very easy to prove its only located with two grub screws at the base of the ignition barrel. I have put a link to the diy change very easy, if you loosen the screws to drop the switch then the barrel should work normally

the part should be available off the shelf if you cannot get to dealership as it's an Audi part.
hope that helps
