Ignition delay/fault

Bowdy

New member
Hi, I am quite new to the forum and have bought in the last 12 months a 912 and 964. Change from Italian to German classics! Some may remember I bought a 912 over 12 months ago on ebay and what an adventure that turned out to be.....its all complete now with great thanks to Max at Revival and I will be taking it to Chatsworth for a day out so will hopefully meet more members.

Anyway the reason for the post is the 964. One of the best cars I have owned and putting too many miles on it. However, its started to be tricky to start. The key turns fine to start the engine but most times now, no engine turns. All lights fine.
Then, the engine will suddenly start and be perfect again. Is the fault in the barrel or the immobiliser or at the starter end? Note as well that the little immobiliser fob entry point does not always make a good connection and takes a couple of attempts to connect and make the beeps followed by the solid LED.

Regards,

Michael

Seems you're talking about 2 separate faults, are you saying that even when your immobiliser has been switched off your starter motor won't turn? in that case I agree with Steve, it's probably a fault between the solenoid and the starter so a new starter would seem to be cure, though firstly before buying a new starter I would check the earth connection.

If however you're saying that the starter motor won't turn whilst you're having the problems with the immobiliser, well that's not surprising as most immobilisers will block the starter motor circuit as part of the security measures, in either case it sounds as though your immobiliser keyfob or the immobiliser itself is starting to cause problems, Personally I'd replace it as sods law it'll eventually let you down when you're miles from home.

Edited to say that before changing the starter make sure that you're getting power to it before changing it as it's also possible that the contacts on your ignition barrel could be faulty, and if that's the case it would be a much cheaper fix than a new starter, either way unless you're mechanically minded I'd have an auto electrician look at it.

A common problem (and one I have had) is the earth strap (battery to body) degrades somehow even though it may look fine it stops functioning properly. I would definitely renew this first.
