Ignition Key replacement - HELP!!

I've had the old key stuck in the ignition problem and followed the very useful guide on Renntech to replace the ignition -

http://www.renntech.org/forums/tutorials/article/24-996-ignition-switch-replace-just-the-switch-with-pictures/

Unfortunately I have a problem, the car battery was dead so I charged the battery and this is working fine, however the car will not start!

after connecting the new switch whenever I connect the battery the car seems like it's on? the lights on the dash light up and the a/c come on, this is before I put the key in the ignition switch. When I do put the key in the switch the car does not turn over?

I'm sure this is a DIY novice issue (at least I hope so) so I'm looking for any advice as to what I may have done wrong? Could it be the ignition switch is not in the zero position? If so how do i resolve this, I put the key in and can engage the steering lock before removing the key so I assume this is the zero position.

Please help...thanks in advance!

It sounds like the switch isn't engaged in the barrel properly. The lock barrel has a blade on the end, which engages in a slot in the switch.

The RennTech guide is probably for LHD cars. There is another one here you might find useful: https://www.porscheclubgb.com/legacy/clientftp/Register/996/tec_ignition_switch.pdf
