Ignition Key Sticking

Can someone please explain why the ignition key is getting stuck while trying to extract it? The key will turn off the engine but then gets stuck and is a real b*gger to get out and the dash shows that key is still in ignition. Also, sometimes, the ignition does not "click" when the key is extracted but if you wiggle it about, it eventually comes out. This is also starting to occur in my 911. Do we need new ignitions or is there a problem with the surround? Thanks, John

No. You are only replacing the plastic electrical switch at the end of the lock barrel. It is not a technically difficult job just fiddly. It takes over an hour to do. I had to do mine in the dark in a car park on an emergency basis. What makes the job easier is if you modify the small screwdriver you need to turn the grab screws by shortening the handle. You will understand what I mean when you have every thing apart and see the grab screws and limited space to get at them.

Well, just replaced the ignition switch. Tried accessing from underneath but impossible to get to the screws and, at my age, all I managed to do was get cramp in my back. Dismantled the side vent and found it much easier from there, although if my hands and arms were any thicker it would have been impossible. Only paid £6.50 from a VW site on ebay. Quite chuffed with myself as nearly gave up after cutting finger and scraping arm on vent surround. Thanks for the instructions Richard, very informative. John
