Ignition Lock Illumination Light Won't Go Out!

Have just replaced the battery on my 97 C4 and noticed that the little light that illuminates the ignition lock doesn't go out after I leave the car either locked or unlocked. Could be co-incidental that I've just replaced the battery but am thinking that some kind of "reboot" has happened when I cut off the electrical supply. Has anyone encountered this or have any idea what I can do to remedy it? As a temporary fix is there a fuse I can remove to stop the battery draining? Thanks in advance for any assistance.
 
I figured it out. If you leave the bonnet slightly ajar (e.g. to attach your battery charger) then the ignition lock light stays on even though the other interior lights go out.
 
Dose the light go out when you close the bonnet ??, if not poss the light delay relay faulty, remove it and see what happens.

I was going to mention the bonnet... I ended up removing the bulb from our 993 (and the bonnet light bulb), just so I didnt have to trap the battery conditioner leads or leave indentations in the rubber seals...

Not sure what year Porsche introduced it.. our 87 3.2 doesnt have it but the 97 993 does.

Done some experimenting and it's definitely opening the bonnet that causes the light to come on - which is a bit annoying if you are trying to charge the battery. Means I'll have to forget my new CTEK charger and go back to the Porsche thing that plugs into the cigarette lighter. Thanks for the input.
 
With the bonnet open you can lock the catch down with a screwdriver so all the lights go out but you must release it when you want to close it, good idea to keep the car in the garage at the time of charging.

Never heard of this, must be a 97 feature, is an obvious feature really because the ignition lock is shadowed from the interior light by the steering wheel, I want an upgrade[:(]
 
As far as i know the ignition light was fitted as an option and not based on year as ive seen it on 95 as well as 97 model years.
It is easy to add it in, if you feel above the ignition you can feel the hole behind the dash covering that the light fitting goes into, not sure if you can buy the fitting from porsche as i think it comes as part of the loom, maybe not the rubber holder that is available, but certainly the bulb holder is part of the loom.
Although it would be easier and cheaper just to buy a led and holder fit that in their.

As for the bonnet catch, you don't need to push it with a screw driver, just push on it with your finger till it locks
 
It may well have been an option before or fitted for other countries, but the ignition illumination was fitted as standard from a 97 MY onwards

as a temporary fix to stop it draining the battery, pull out the speedo and if u look inside the dash you can see the back of the ignition light, pull it out and remove the bulb.

The ignition light is controlled by the comfort control unit under the drivers, that maybe faulty.

The only other thing I could think apart from that, is maybe the wire to the ignition light is shorting to earth on the metal work behind the dash, although really need to look at the wiring diagram to see if the design of the circuit would allow it to illuminate if it shorted to earth, though if you do take the bulb out maybe worth checking the cable from the dash loom to ignition light for any damage
 
Did a little more investigation this afternoon, and although my car (September 1996) does not have the illuminated ignition switch, it does seem to have a cut out in the bottom of the dasboard just to the right of the ignition switch where I presume the light could be fitted.

Has anyone retro-fitted the light and in particular does the harness have the bulb holder already fitted?

Can't you just feed your CTEK cable up through the gap between the trailing edge of the bonnet and the windscreen trim Philip? It's a ribbon cable, so pretty flat.

Works fine on my Cayman with the bonnet closed and I can't believe that the 997 is any different.

From the parts catalog: 964 632 113 01 bulb holder, illumination, ashtray, ignition starter lock. So maybe there is a recess above the ashtray too? I'm away so can't check my car.
 
Yes,

On my '97 there's both the ignition light and ashtray light - both in identical little rubber squashable holders. I removed the bulbs from both as they were of no real benefit ( and removed the ashtray insert to use that space for my Blackberry, and hardwired mp3 player).
I find using the integral bulb in the key when approaching the keyhole is much greater help than the ignition light ever was.
Ashtray bulb is in the back of the ashtray.
