Ignition Switch - Oval Dash

Am having a few random issues with the electrics that, I think, is down to a faulty ignition switch. Doesn't do it on start-up every time but will find that a combination of things wont work, usually, the electric windows, fan blower and indicators...but can be other combinations. Turn it off and re-start and everything will be back to normal again.

I suspect this is linked to a faulty ignition switch - either cracked or poor connections. I've looked on Clarks and can only see reference to the square-dash ignition switch removal but nothing for the oval dash. Methinks it should be easier on the oval dash as it doesn't require stripping down the steering column. I know the switch is from a MK1 Golf and thought about tackling it myself. Anyone know of any links (i've done a Post search) where it takes you through the procedure?

...and another thing;

Always fires-up first time from cold on the first turn of the key. When warm, it will have to crank 5/6 times and sounds a bit Asthmatic before it'll fire-up. It has a new distributor cap, rotor arm, plugs and leads - I also changed the DME relay for good luck - but is still struggling. Clarks, again, points to a few things but wondered if anyone had experienced similar warm starting problems and help me with what to try next?

Have now had my Lux for 8 months and, don't know how, have caught the bug! Not just me but my whole family are really taken with the car after being a bit dubious when I said I was going for one. So, just need to sort these last couple of Gremlins and it'll be up to scratch.
 
Sounds like the ignition switch to me mate. I recently had a similar problem manifest after my ignition switch disintigrated. Mite I point out as a result of previous owner tinkering!!! I managed to cobble it back together to last long enough to source a replacement but symptoms were as for yours windows stop working etc. As for removal you have to wedge yourself into the footwell then remove the multiplug of the back of the switch. Once this is done there are only two slot head screws securing it to the barrel. It is fidly in situ as space is at a premium and you will need a fairly short screwdriver to do it. Refitting is obviously exactly the reverse.
 
Thanks for confirming Rob. I have ordered the switch from Porsche - the cheapest price, believe it or not. I'll see if I can squeeze my slight and nimble torso under the footwell at the weekend [:)]

There is a bit of slack on the ignition barrel itself allowing me to pull it forward about half an inch so I suspect a previous owner has been tinkering with it too!
