Ignition switch replacement query

nigelp

New member
Can anyone tell me what to do? My ignition switch has always been dodgy, the previous owner put a button under the dash wired to start the car. I now want to replace the switch properly, do I need to take out the whole dash or does it split?

I bought a new ignition switch but think it's actually the barrel as the key feels that it's not turning fully every time.

Any advice welcomed.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Nigel

This is one of those jobs that when you do it, you know it's done, but has minimal impact on the resale value. I had a new ignition switch fitted to my car, and i think it was a minor job (from the notes, it took ~ 2hrs)

I had mine done by...the very people you purchased your car from.

You can unscrew the large round plastic trim that surrounds the lock with your fingers. That exposes two special security bolts (shear blots) that have no head. You would have to chisel these loose - or gring a slot and use a big screw driver. That to me looks all that is necessary to remove barrel. The switch part is screwed into the back of the lock by two small allen bolts accesable after pulling off the multiplug.
